On August 4, the 2026 mid-year meeting of the BRICS Business Council was held via video conference. Liao Lin, Chairman of the Chinese Council and Chairman of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), attended the meeting, along with representatives from Chinese Council working groups attending virtually.
The meeting was also joined by heads or representatives of the BRICS Business Council from Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. During the session, the Chair of the Council from India, the current rotating presidency, presented the council's annual activity plan, and each industry working group reported on their progress for the year.
Council members from various countries engaged in in-depth discussions on leveraging complementary strengths, enhancing coordination, and driving the "Greater BRICS Cooperation" to yield more practical outcomes. The Chinese Council put forward recommendations for future work, including earnestly implementing the consensus reached at the BRICS leaders' meeting to create more landmark and influential results; fully leveraging the council's communication and coordination advantages to support enhanced connectivity among nations and facilitate practical cooperation among BRICS enterprises; fostering new growth drivers in trade and the economy by focusing on emerging areas such as technological innovation and green development; and deepening "BRICS Plus" cooperation to share development dividends with Global South nations, thereby helping to elevate and upgrade BRICS cooperation.
The BRICS Business Council was established in March 2013 during the Fifth BRICS Summit in Durban, South Africa, with the Chinese Council being founded in Beijing in May 2013. As a key mechanism for exchange and cooperation within the BRICS business community, the council aims to strengthen and promote economic, trade, business, and investment ties, foster regular dialogue between the business community and governments, and propose solutions to related issues.
