ECB Policymaker Signals Growing Momentum in European Economy

Deep News02:11

European Central Bank Governing Council member Martin Kocher indicated that the European economy is gaining increasing traction, as policymakers assess the extent of further interest rate increases required.

The economy has proven to be more resilient than many anticipate, currently exhibiting observable momentum that is building, the Austrian central bank governor stated in an interview during the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. When addressing inflation concerns, Kocher emphasized he remains vigilant and is not taking any chances.

These remarks underscore the ongoing deliberation among ECB officials regarding the continuation of monetary policy tightening measures. The ECB raised its deposit rate by 25 basis points in June, yet inflation continues to significantly exceed the 2% target, driven partly by elevated energy costs stemming from the conflict in Iran, and is projected to stay elevated in the coming months.
