Sanrio, the parent company of Hello Kitty, has established an independent gaming brand and plans to release ten games over the next three years with a total investment of approximately 10 billion yen. This marks a significant step in systematically expanding the company's intellectual property portfolio into interactive entertainment.
On Tuesday, April 21, Sanrio Games announced that the first title under its new "Sanrio Games" brand will debut this fall as a console game for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 platforms. A second game is expected to launch by March 2027.
The company stated that the games will incorporate its wide range of character assets, allowing players to create personalized avatars in towns themed around Sanrio characters.
Although the gaming division is projected to operate at a loss in the short term, with each game costing around 2 billion yen to develop, Sanrio emphasized that the expected losses will not significantly impact its consolidated financial results. In February, the company raised its full-year operating profit forecast by 7% to 75.1 billion yen, reflecting confidence in its core business even as it explores new ventures.
**Gaming Expansion Accelerates IP Monetization**
Sanrio's entry into the gaming market reflects a broader trend among Japanese IP holders seeking to diversify revenue streams. Peers such as Bandai Namco Holdings and Nintendo have long employed similar strategies, extending their character assets into games and other media.
Under its mid-term management plan, Sanrio has outlined a pipeline of at least six games and allocated roughly 10 billion yen (approximately $62.9 million) for development and marketing. Several titles are currently in pre-production or active development.
Market observers remain cautious about the prospects of Sanrio's gaming business. Tomoaki Kawasaki, a senior analyst at IwaiCosmo Securities, noted:
While a hit game could become a new growth driver, gaming revenue is expected to contribute minimally to overall performance at this stage. Success will depend on whether Sanrio can leverage its strong character IP portfolio to create genuinely engaging game content.
Gaming represents just one of several initiatives Sanrio is pursuing to broaden its character monetization channels. The company is also advancing its presence in film, with a Hello Kitty-themed movie scheduled for global release in July 2028, marking the IP's Hollywood debut.
