Hyundai Motor and its sister company Kia Motors said on Tuesday that they will conduct test operations of Level 4 autonomous trucks. This move aims to further advance autonomous driving technology and pave the way for commercialization.
The two automakers signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the project with Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Glovis, both under the Hyundai Motor Group, as well as autonomous driving technology startups Mars Auto and RideFlux, at the Hyundai Motor Group Namyang R&D Center in Hwaseong, southwest of Seoul.
Level 4 autonomous driving allows vehicles to operate without human intervention under specific conditions and within designated operational areas, even in emergency situations.
According to the MOU, Hyundai and Kia will develop and provide two Xcient trucks early next year, including a hydrogen fuel cell model. The test project will cover a distance of approximately 500 kilometers, divided into two routes: one is a 100-kilometer segment combining highways and urban roads, and the other is a 400-kilometer long-distance highway route.
