BitGo and Kalshi Launch HODL Margining Network to Let Institutions Borrow Against Crypto Instead of Selling It

Stock News10-23

On October 22, 2026, BitGo Holdings, Inc. (BTGO.US) and Kalshi Prime jointly unveiled the HODL Margining network, designed to address the liquidity squeeze institutional investors face when they must meet US dollar margin calls.

The system enables users to obtain loans using BTC, ETH or qualifying stablecoins as collateral, sparing them from being forced to liquidate their crypto holdings and redefining how margin is managed in derivatives trading.

In terms of architecture, the solution deeply integrates Kalshi Prime's commercial trading services with the infrastructure of BitGo Bank & Trust, N.A., a national trust bank supervised by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that BitGo Bank & Trust became the first qualified custodian admitted to the network, with its core role being to ensure the secure segregation of collateral assets.

Under this mechanism, loan funds originate from Kalshi Katalyst, the credit arm of Kalshi Prime. Once the dollar funds are disbursed, they are injected directly into the user's Kalshi Prime account for trading perpetual contracts and derivatives on the KalshiEX platform.

Crucially, custody of collateral, lending and trading operations are strictly separated: assets always remain at BitGo Bank & Trust, are never transferred to the Kalshi trading platform, and never pass through any external intermediary. These assets are held in separate accounts that meet bankruptcy-remote standards, fully walled off from BitGo's day-to-day operating assets, and stored in institutional-grade cold storage offering up to US$250 million in insurance protection.

Throughout the loan cycle, ownership of the assets remains with the depositor, but until the debt is repaid in full, the assets are subject to a security interest granted to Kalshi Katalyst. This structure effectively addresses the pain point of the traditional brokerage model, in which clients must either dump crypto assets or bring in external fiat money to meet margin requirements, significantly simplifying margin management and protecting clients' strategic long-term positions.

Regulatory compliance and risk disclosure are another key dimension of the product's rollout. Kalshi Prime is registered with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a futures commission merchant and is a member of the National Futures Association (NFA), ensuring compliance on the trading side; however, Kalshi Katalyst, which provides the credit support, and the credit agreements it issues fall outside the oversight of the CFTC or the NFA, meaning the lending leg follows different compliance standards.

The company explicitly discloses that using credit leverage magnifies loss risk, and that adverse price moves in the relevant assets could lead to liquidation of collateral. Kalshi Prime CEO Jeff Bandman noted that the project's core goal is to make the traditional futures commission merchant model better suited to institutional clients accustomed to holding digital assets. BitGo Holdings, Inc. (BTGO.US) CEO and co-founder Mike Belshe stressed that for institutional investors, improving portfolio yield without sacrificing security is essential, and that institutional-grade custody effectively serves as a safe conduit for bringing credit liquidity directly into regulated trading venues.

The launch of this feature further expands the KalshiEX platform ecosystem. The platform began offering perpetual contract trading on May 29, 2026, and by the end of October 2026 it listed 19 crypto trading pairs along with a range of perpetual indices tied to real-world assets. With the completion of technical audits and the signing of bilateral agreements among the parties, the HODL Margining network is expected to bring in more qualified custodians.

This marks, after collateralized lending against traditional financial assets, an important evolution of crypto-native institutional infrastructure in the field of liquidity optimization, signaling that the collateral utility of crypto assets in derivatives trading has gained institutional recognition.
