Time-lapse footage has revealed the devastating moment when a dammed lake overflow in Taiwan swept 120 cattle into the Pacific Ocean. Surveillance video showed floodwaters engulfing a cattle farm within 50 seconds after the overflow occurred in the upper reaches of Mataian Creek in Hualien.
The disaster struck on September 23, when muddy floodwater rushed into cattle sheds. Dairy cows desperately raised their heads above water in a struggle for survival, but the water level quickly rose above their heads. Additionally, 120 cattle grazing outdoors were instantly swept away by the torrential floodwaters.
Farm owner Lin Mingji estimated the total losses at NT$16 million. He expressed frustration over the authorities' response to his reports, stating that he had not received adequate assistance from relevant departments. "It doesn't count if we don't see the cattle carcasses," he said, referring to the official handling of the situation.
The incident highlights the severe impact of the dammed lake overflow on local agriculture and livestock farming in the region.
