At the 2026 Dalian Summer Davos Forum held from June 23 to 25, Zhao Dong, General Manager of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, shared insights during a sub-forum titled "Materials Determine Prosperity." He stated that achieving the carbon peak target is relatively straightforward, but realizing carbon neutrality critically depends on carbon capture and storage as a core method.
Zhao Dong noted that current carbon storage technologies still face cost pressures, a social responsibility that energy companies must bear. He expressed hope for the emergence of disruptive, breakthrough technologies in the future to fundamentally solve the industry's carbon reduction challenges.
Regarding the future development of the green hydrogen industry, Zhao Dong indicated that current applications are primarily in demonstration projects. For future cost reduction and efficiency gains, the key lies in large-scale promotion and broadening application scenarios.
He analyzed that beyond integration with refining, chemical, and metallurgical industries, the transportation sector represents a significant area for growth. While China's electric vehicle industry is developing rapidly, hydrogen fuel cell transportation is an important future direction, particularly for heavy-duty trucks, cold-chain logistics, and long-distance freight, where green hydrogen holds unique advantages.
In his view, as the cost of green hydrogen continues to decline, application scenarios diversify, and the industrial scale expands, green hydrogen will become a highly competitive ultimate clean energy source. He concluded that once costs are effectively controlled and application scenarios and industrial scale are comprehensively enhanced, green hydrogen will emerge as a premium ultimate clean energy, empowering the green and low-carbon transformation across all industries.
