On the 16th, South Korea's Ministry of Finance issued a statement saying it will closely monitor whether stock market volatility spreads to the bond, foreign exchange, and currency markets. The government and relevant institutions will strengthen stock market monitoring and severely deal with any actions that disrupt market order.
The statement said that strong economic growth expectations, a current account surplus, and improving corporate earnings mean that the fundamentals of the South Korean stock market remain solid. As of press time, the KOSPI rose more than 2.9%, reaching 5,715.73 points.
On the 15th, the KOSPI closed down 7.56% at 5,554.27 points, after falling more than 9% at one point during the session. That day, South Korean stocks experienced two circuit breakers. In the morning, because the KOSPI fell more than 5%, the Korea Exchange activated the SIDECAR mechanism, suspending program selling on the KOSPI. At midday, the KOSDAQ index plunged 8%, triggering a circuit breaker mechanism, and trading was suspended for 20 minutes.
On the 15th, South Korean financial regulators held an emergency meeting on the stock market and issued an official statement, requiring proactive response measures to ensure market stability and protect investors; urging financial institutions to avoid excessive credit supply and to do a good job in investor protection and risk management; and stating that they will severely handle actions that disrupt the market and prepare to launch emergency plans when necessary.
