Scammer's Daily Greetings Win Over Elderly Woman, Who Sends Gold in Response

A delivery worker in Nanjing's Yuhuatai District recently alerted the police after discovering hard objects concealed within a package of clothing, suspected to be gold.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers confirmed that gold bars had been deliberately sewn into the garments, which were being sent from Nanjing to a location in Henan province, with the sender identified as a woman in her sixties, surnamed Wu.

The unusual method of shipping gold raised immediate suspicions, prompting investigators to visit Ms. Wu directly to clarify the situation.

Ms. Wu initially gave inconsistent explanations, at times claiming it was a mistake and other times stating the items were for her child living in another city.

Based on their experience, officers concluded that Ms. Wu was likely the target of a scam and attempted to persuade her of this possibility.

Despite their patient efforts, Ms. Wu remained insistent that she was not being deceived and firmly rejected the officers' concerns.

With no other option, the police contacted Ms. Wu's daughter, and through their joint persuasion, the full story eventually emerged.

It was revealed that Ms. Wu, an avid viewer of online videos, had been drawn into a chat group where scammers gradually gained her trust through daily morning and evening greetings.

The fraudsters convinced her that she could get rich through investment and instructed her not to discuss the matter with family members.

When Ms. Wu explained she had no cash but possessed gold bars, the scammers immediately suggested she could use the gold as collateral.

This sequence of events led directly to the initial discovery of the gold-sewn clothing intended for shipment.
