BNP Paribas: Middle East Tensions Fuel Demand for Unmanned Weapons, Assigns $330 Target to AeroVironment (AVAV.US)

Stock News04-14

Analyst Matt Akers of BNP Paribas stated in a research report on Monday that AeroVironment (AVAV.US) shares possess significant potential for appreciation. Akers reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating on the stock and set a price target of $330. The report was issued following recent discussions with the company's management, who reiterated their existing performance guidance. Akers noted that while a weak third-quarter performance raised concerns among some investors, AeroVironment appears satisfied with its implied outlook for the fourth quarter. The analyst added that the company may have adopted a conservative approach in its forecasts, considering the softer Q3 results.

The report highlights that demand for the company's Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and related technologies remains robust, with geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, driving increasing focus on its product portfolio. AeroVironment manufactures a range of systems for surveillance, targeting, and strike missions, including counter-UAS technology and loitering munitions. BNP Paribas indicated that this demand environment is expected to support the company's growth through fiscal 2027 and beyond, especially in areas such as counter-UAS, long-range reconnaissance, and one-way attack platforms.

The research also pointed out that the U.S. government's initial budget request includes $54 billion for autonomous combat initiatives and continues to fund unmanned systems, which could be beneficial for the company. Further details on the allocations are anticipated in the coming weeks. Additionally, AeroVironment's recent acquisition of engineering firm ESAero for $200 million is projected to enhance its technical capabilities and accelerate the transition of products from development to full-scale production. BNP Paribas estimates the deal could contribute $80 million to $100 million in annual revenue and $10 million to $15 million in EBITDA for AeroVironment.

Looking ahead, the bank forecasts mid-single-digit growth for AeroVironment's services and development business by fiscal 2027, with additional growth potential from projects like its LOCUST swarm drone system. BNP Paribas stated that AeroVironment's current valuation, based on the enterprise value-to-sales ratio, is near the lower end of its historical range, presenting a compelling investment opportunity given the expected growth drivers.
