French defense company Thales and Google Cloud announced a partnership on Wednesday to launch a new European cloud service in Germany. This service will operate independently from Google's systems in both operational and legal terms.
The European Union has been actively promoting the development of local technology solutions to reduce reliance on foreign service providers, particularly in the cloud computing sector, which is dominated by large U.S. companies.
Thales will establish a new local entity in Germany, with staffing and daily management entirely handled by a German team.
The cloud service is designed to meet the requirements of German public sector institutions regarding digital sovereignty and various regulatory compliances.
The dedicated cloud infrastructure will be fully owned and controlled by Thales.
The cloud service has already begun internal testing and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
The name of the new joint venture will be officially announced in the coming months.
Its technical architecture and operational model will be consistent with Thales' French sovereign cloud service, S3NS.
