Recently, a four-story residential building in Zhongnan Road, Wuchang District, Wuhan, has welcomed its first batch of residents—JD.com couriers and food delivery riders. This marks JD.com's first standalone "Courier Home" in Wuhan, providing free accommodation for frontline JD.com couriers and full-time riders through whole-building leasing. The facility boasts a convenient location, serving nearby JD.com delivery stations.
Jiang Chang, a 23-year-old full-time JD.com rider from Xiaogan, Hubei, has been delivering food in Wuhan for three years. After joining JD.com in May, his income improved significantly. However, in Wuchang District—home to many universities—monthly rent of 1,000 yuan remained a financial burden. In November, Jiang became one of the first to move into the "Courier Home," where he now pays less than 50 yuan monthly for utilities. Sharing a room with fellow riders on the same shift, he enjoys better rest and easier order pickups. Jiang said he has saved enough for a down payment on an apartment in Wuchang and plans to settle in Wuhan, citing JD.com’s provision of social insurance and housing fund for full-time riders as key support.
Liao Qingming, a 44-year-old JD.com courier with 11 years of experience, previously lived alone near his delivery station. Now, the company-leased building offers enhanced security with an independent access system and improved amenities, including laundry facilities, a shared kitchen and dining area, a reading corner, and family guest rooms—all fostering a sense of safety and comfort.
The Wuhan "Courier Home" manager stated that the building, leased by JD.com, is open to full-time riders and couriers from nearby stations, with same-day move-in possible upon application. Each room features a private bathroom, air conditioning, a bed, a desk, and a water heater, allowing for immediate occupancy. JD.com plans to expand the initiative to other Wuhan areas based on operational needs.
Currently, JD.com has established "Courier Homes" in cities like Beijing, Wuhan, and Chengdu through self-construction and leasing, addressing frontline employees' housing needs. These facilities prioritize proximity to delivery hubs and cost-effective living solutions tailored to workers' requirements.
Previously, JD.com announced providing 28,000 housing units for frontline staff, with plans to invest 22 billion yuan over five years to supply 150,000 "Courier Homes." The initiative aims to build the most extensive, high-quality, and inclusive housing support system for delivery personnel through flexible and diverse solutions.
