Pentagon Implements Anthropic's Mythos for Cyber Defense While Phasing Out Future Collaboration

Deep News05-13

The U.S. Department of Defense's chief technology officer stated on Tuesday that the Pentagon is deploying Anthropic's Mythos cybersecurity model to identify and remediate software vulnerabilities across various U.S. government agencies.

According to Anthropic, Mythos was launched on April 7 and is being deployed as part of the company's "Project Glasswing" initiative. This is a controlled program that allows selected organizations to use the not-yet-publicly-released Claude Mythos Preview model for defensive cybersecurity purposes.

Anthropic describes Mythos as capable of detecting vulnerabilities that have existed for decades in web browsers, infrastructure, and software.

Emil Michael, the U.S. Department of Defense's chief technology officer and undersecretary for research and engineering, stated that the Pentagon will proceed with its plan to remove Anthropic's products from the project within the coming months.

However, he noted that the Mythos deployment is "a matter of national security," and the government has enhanced its cyber defenses as a result, due to the model's specialized ability to discover and patch network vulnerabilities.

Speaking at a conference in Washington, D.C., Michael told attendees that while these vulnerabilities have long existed, AI tools like Mythos mean they can now be found and fixed more quickly—but also that they can be exploited more rapidly.

Michael added that Anthropic's advantage is only temporary, noting that models from OpenAI, xAI, and Google are expected to be available soon.

The U.S. Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk after the two parties failed to reach an agreement on the specific applications of Anthropic's models within the agency.

Anthropic sued the Trump administration in March in an attempt to overturn the Pentagon's "blacklisting" decision.
