Shenzhen Higher Education Enrollment Trends: Traditional Majors Hold Steady While New Programs Surge in Popularity

As admission letters from Shenzhen universities reach prospective students, the question of which majors are the most sought-after for the current year has become clear. The enrollment data reveals a clear picture of student preferences and institutional priorities.

Computer science, electronic information, and integrated circuit engineering have emerged as the top-tier choices, capturing the highest admission scores across most institutions. Long-standing traditional majors remain strong, continuously revitalized by industrial applications, while newly launched programs have made a powerful first impression. Characteristic classes, often led by academicians and built through university-enterprise cooperation, have become a powerful magnet for top-scoring students.

Traditional Majors Maintain Their Role as Cornerstones

Established popular fields like computer science, electronic information, and finance continue to serve as the bedrock of admission scores for various universities. Zhang Lin, a student from Longjin High School in Shenzhen, scored 610 points and was admitted to the Electronic Information Engineering Technology (Experimental Class) at the Future Technology College of Shenzhen Polytechnic University. For her, the primary factor in choosing a major was the availability of practical training opportunities closely aligned with industry needs and clear career prospects. "The university offers many opportunities for industry collaboration, allowing us to engage with real-world work scenarios in advance and learn to think independently while solving practical problems," she explained.

This sentiment is widespread. Data shows that at Shenzhen University, the application groups for artificial intelligence and computer science are the most popular. At Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), the highest admission scores are concentrated in majors like artificial intelligence and embodied intelligence. Southern University of Science and Technology admitted only 22 students in its regular batch, with the highest scores in frontier science, technology, and medicine. Shenzhen University of Technology focuses on high-precision, cutting-edge new engineering and life sciences, while Shenzhen Technology University reports that artificial intelligence and computer science secured the top admission scores across the entire university. The Electronic Information Engineering Technology experimental class at Shenzhen Polytechnic University had a minimum admission score of 596, a five-point increase from the previous year.

The enduring popularity of traditional majors is a direct result of the deep integration between Shenzhen’s universities and the city’s pillar industries. In this context, a major is a direct pathway to the industry, and a student's choice is a direct investment in their future career.

New Majors, Aligned with Emerging Industries, Show Immediate Impact

While traditional powerhouse majors continue to perform strongly, multiple universities in Shenzhen introduced new programs in 2026, all highly focused on national strategic priorities and key Shenzhen sectors. These new majors have demonstrated remarkable growth in their first year of enrollment.

Shenzhen University’s newly established School of Integrated Circuits, led by Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Mao Junfa and based on the National Key Laboratory of Radio Frequency Heterogeneous Heterogeneous Integration, admitted its first class. In its first year, the school set up a separate program group in Guangdong for physics students. The highest admission score was 631, with a minimum of 621, placing it among the top of the university's admission lines. The university's new Cryptography Science and Technology major, built within the School of Artificial Intelligence and focusing on cutting-edge areas like AI security and privacy protection, also performed well, with a physics-stream high of 629 and a low of 625.

Harbin Institute of Technology’s new "Embodied Intelligence (Greater Bay Area Class)" integrates resources from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Shenzhen Institute of Science and Technology, with Professor Li Zexiang, dean of the Shenzhen Institute of Science and Technology, serving as chief advisor. The new "Excellent Joint Training Class" major cluster uses a "1+3" cross-campus model, where students spend their first year at the Harbin main campus for broad-based general education and fundamental engineering training, and the subsequent three years at the Shenzhen campus for industry-related research projects and internships. This model has attracted many high-scoring applicants.

The Tianjin University-Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shenzhen Future Technology Institute, which enrolled its first students this year, recorded a maximum admission score of 653 and a minimum of 630 in Guangdong province. The institute's undergraduate programs in Intelligent Medical Engineering (Brain-Computer Interface) and Computer Science have proven particularly popular.

Specialized and Academician-Led Classes Dominate Top Scores

If new majors are the "dark horses" of this year, then high-end programs characterized by academician leadership and university-enterprise collaboration are the undisputed "champion corps," capturing almost all the highest admission score brackets. This year, Shenzhen University’s two special classes co-established with Tencent—the Computer Science (Tencent Class) and Internet and New Media (Chuan Teng Class)—ranked first in the university's 2026 Guangdong province admission lines for physics and history streams, respectively. The Computer Science (Tencent Class) had a maximum admission score of 646 (rank 5006) and a minimum of 634, while the Internet and New Media (Chuan Teng Class) achieved a maximum of 612 (rank 1762) and a minimum of 603 in the history stream.

In fact, Shenzhen University offers 41 special classes (including six academician-led classes) to provide diverse options for personalized student development. In 2026, 12 new special classes were admitted directly through the college entrance exam, with average admission ranks generally higher than their corresponding regular classes—about 2,318 places higher in the physics stream and 1,526 places higher in the history stream. Top-tier academic classes are also highly sought after. The newly established Yau Shing-tung Class at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), which offers a dual-major model of "Artificial Intelligence + Mathematics," has also attracted a large number of high-scoring students.

Specialized classes in the vocational undergraduate sector have also performed exceptionally. The Electronic Information Engineering Technology experimental class at Shenzhen Polytechnic University recorded the highest physics-stream score in Guangdong Province at 610, exceeding the special control line by 71 points.
