On November 20, photographer Dai Jianfeng announced via Weibo that the Tianjin Heping District People's Court had issued a first-instance judgment in his copyright infringement lawsuit against Visual China Group Co.,Ltd. The court ruled that the image "Village Under the Milky Way," which was stolen by Visual China's contracted contributor Zhou and uploaded without authorization, constituted infringement. Visual China was ordered to pay 15,000 yuan in compensation and remove the infringing content. However, the court found that the company's sale of 148 other photos by Dai did not violate copyright laws.
Visual China responded by stating that the court confirmed the legitimate authorization chain for the 148 disputed photos, clearing them of infringement. Regarding the single stolen image uploaded by contributor Zhou, the company emphasized its "zero tolerance" policy toward copyright violations, particularly image theft, and confirmed it had pursued legal action against Zhou.
The case highlights ongoing challenges in digital content licensing and enforcement within China's creative industries.
