At a regular press conference held on June 3, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council addressed recent developments.
A journalist inquired about the recent review by Taiwan's legislative body of a new special budget of nearly 300 billion New Taiwan Dollars for US arms purchases, noting opposition from multiple political parties and groups on the island who call for enhanced cross-strait dialogue to share the dividends of peace.
Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian responded, stating that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, in pursuit of their political self-interest for "Taiwan independence," are militarizing and preparing for conflict, recklessly squandering the hard-earned money of the Taiwanese people.
Mainland's Position on Taiwan Arms Purchases
Zhu Fenglian emphasized that the DPP authorities are willingly acting as a cash cow for the US military-industrial complex, risking turning Taiwan into a powder keg and compelling its residents to serve as cannon fodder for "Taiwan independence" agendas, thereby pushing the broader Taiwanese populace into the peril of war.
She noted that various sectors within Taiwanese society have already expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to these actions.
The Path Forward for Taiwan
The spokesperson concluded by stating that the future of Taiwan, along with the safety, security, and well-being of Taiwanese compatriots, lies in the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and national reunification.
She expressed hope that Taiwanese compatriots would recognize the extreme danger and harm of the DPP authorities' stubborn adherence to the "Taiwan independence" separatist path, firmly oppose such separatist activities and external interference, and work together to steer cross-strait relations back onto the track of peaceful development, thereby safeguarding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and ensuring their own security and welfare.
