HK Opening Bell | Three Major Indices Open Lower Across the Board; Alibaba and Tencent Fall Over 1%, DIAGENS-B Rises More Than 4%, ND PAPER Gains Over 3%

HK Opening Bell09:23

Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index started the session on the back foot, slipping 0.74% to 24,649.45 as risk appetite waned after a cautious U.S. session. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index lost 0.70% to 8,215.55, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 0.78% to 4,344.85, extending its recent soft patch.

Overall sentiment was defensive, with broad-based selling pressure outweighing selective bargain-hunting.

Gains in select biotech and materials counters provided pockets of resilience, contrasting with weakness across heavyweight internet platforms and hardware names. Paper producers and logistics operators also posted early advances, whereas financial technology and semiconductor plays lagged. Investors continued to sift through company-specific catalysts in the absence of major macro drivers.

Opening Summary

The Hang Seng Index stumbled out of the gates, giving back 0.7% as traders adopted a guarded stance following a soft lead from Wall Street. The HSCEI and Hang Seng Tech Index tracked the pull-back, down 0.7% and 0.8% respectively, with no major milestones breached but sentiment clearly cautious.

Large-cap internet and hardware names weighed on the tech gauge. Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu and JD.com all slipped by roughly 1–1.5%, while Li Auto extended recent underperformance with a 1.6% retreat. The across-the-board softness underscores lingering concerns over global demand and domestic consumption.

Individual volatility was pronounced. Lufax plunged more than 20% after disappointing updates, making it the morning’s sharpest decliner. Conversely, newly listed biotech play Diagens-B jumped over 4%, leading gainers alongside ND Paper and shipping group SITC, which found buyers on sector-specific news flow.

With sector data patchy at the open, investors focused on stock-specific stories: biotech and materials names outperformed, while precision hardware, leveraged chip-related products and fintech lagged. No sizable IPOs debuted today, keeping primary-market attention on secondary-market price discovery.
