This move comes at a critical juncture as TSMC's production capacity nears saturation and Samsung accelerates the development of its advanced semiconductor processes. The composition of the delegation sends a clear signal: Samsung is prioritizing a breakthrough in its foundry operations.
According to industry sources in South Korea, Lee Jae-yong arrived at the Sun Valley resort in Idaho, USA, on July 7th and immediately commenced a packed schedule of meetings.
Unlike last year's attendance with the global marketing chief, this year he brought along President Han Jin-man, who was appointed head of the Foundry Business Division late last year. This change in personnel is interpreted by observers as a strategic pivot from brand promotion to substantive business negotiations. Han Jin-man, who previously oversaw North American semiconductor operations, possesses deep connections within the U.S. tech industry and is seen as a key figure for securing major client contracts.
The summit has attracted a roster of tech giants including Apple CEO Tim Cook and incoming CEO John Ternus, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, alongside leaders like Arm CEO Rene Haas and General Motors Chairman Mary Barra. These companies represent either existing or potential partners for Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., providing Lee with a highly concentrated opportunity for business discussions.
Focus on Apple's Processor Orders
The potential for progress in Samsung's collaboration with Apple is a major point of interest at this summit.
Apple has fielded an unusually large delegation of three key executives: current CEO Tim Cook, incoming CEO John Ternus (set to assume the role on September 1st), and Senior Vice President of Services, Andy Jue, all of whom are present in Sun Valley.
Samsung's foundry division secured an order for image sensor chips from Apple in August last year and is now seeking a more significant breakthrough: re-entering the supply chain for the iPhone's application processor (AP).
This processor is currently manufactured exclusively by TSMC. According to previous reports, Apple executives engaged in discussions with Samsung last month regarding the potential for foundry services for main processors, bringing the possibility into sharper focus.
Analysts note that if an order for Apple processors materializes, Samsung would capture a portion of the core production capacity from TSMC, providing a substantial boost to the market standing of its foundry business.
Amazon and OpenAI: Expanding Beyond HBM
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are both in attendance at Sun Valley, maintaining regular contact with Lee Jae-yong.
Currently, both Amazon and OpenAI are existing customers for Samsung's high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and are also potential clients for its foundry services.
Both companies are actively developing their own AI chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia.
With TSMC's capacity remaining tight, Samsung, with its expanding 2-nanometer advanced process technology, is being viewed as a viable alternative partner to absorb overflow demand. The summit provides Samsung with an opportunity to build upon its HBM supply relationships and advance negotiations for broader foundry business.
Arm and General Motors: Strengthening Existing Alliances
The presence of Arm CEO Rene Haas facilitates a meeting with this long-term partner.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has collaborated with Arm for over a decade to optimize its advanced processes using Arm's design assets, forging a deep technical alliance. Haas participated in a trilateral meeting last February in Seoul with Lee Jae-yong, SoftBank Group Chairman Masayoshi Son, and Sam Altman to discuss AI strategy.
Furthermore, the attendance of General Motors Chairman Mary Barra, whose company collaborates with Samsung SDI on automotive batteries, provides a setting for further discussions on automotive business opportunities.
Other notable figures such as Google's Chief Business Officer Philip Schindler and Meta Vice Chairman Dina Powell McCormick are also present, making Lee Jae-yong's business itinerary exceptionally full.
The Significance of the Sun Valley Summit
Hosted by investment bank Allen & Company, the Sun Valley Summit is held each July, bringing together approximately 300 top leaders from technology, media, finance, and automotive sectors for private strategic discussions, earning it the nickname "billionaires' summer camp."
This year's event is scheduled from July 7th to 10th. Notably, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Elon Musk are absent this year.
Lee Jae-yong has previously described the Sun Valley Summit as his "busiest business trip of the year," and this marks his second consecutive year of attendance.
At a time when Samsung's foundry business faces intense competition from TSMC and urgently needs to expand its portfolio of high-end clients, the commercial value of this summit for Samsung extends far beyond mere networking.
