Changbai Mountain in autumn is a dazzling spectacle with colorful forests at the foot and snow-capped peaks above. The pristine Tianchi Lake sparkles like a jade gem nestled among the mountains. The once lengthy journey has been transformed by high-speed rail, now taking under five hours, making this poetic destination more accessible than ever.
The Shenyang to Jiamusi high-speed railway, specifically the Shenyang to Baihe section, officially commenced operations on September 28. We've compiled the train schedules for travel to Changbai Mountain: from Beijing Chaoyang Station to Changbai Mountain Station, the fastest route takes just 4 hours and 33 minutes.
On the morning of October 16, Beijing Chaoyang Station buzzed with activity, with orderly queues at the entrance. Staff were assisting travelers in using the “courtesy channel” for ticket validation. One traveler, Grandma Li, excitedly shared, “It used to be a hassle bringing children to the station, carrying luggage while pulling them along, but now with guidance, we can get in under five minutes!” Her granddaughter chimed in, “Grandma, let’s take the train to Beijing again next time!”
The spacious waiting hall featured twelve giant lighting columns, with neat rows of light brown seating equipped with multiple outlets and Type-C charging ports beneath each armrest. Mr. Wang, waiting for his train, swiftly scrolled through his phone, relieved that he could charge his device at the station.
At 9:30 a.m., ticketing for train G943, operated by the Beijing Railway Bureau, began. Ms. Liang was swiftly packing her luggage, sharing, “I used to think Changbai Mountain was far away, but I learned recently from the news that a high-speed train connects Beijing and Changbai Mountain in less than five hours. I booked my ticket immediately!”
After passing through the ticket gate, travelers prepared to board. “Your seat is in carriage 5; please move forward,” said Train Manager Shi Yajing, warmly welcoming passengers.
The G943 train departed punctually at 9:50 a.m. Not long after, Staff Hu Linyu discovered a new passenger worried about a missing coat button. She promptly provided a sewing kit to assist her, while ensuring a cup of hot water was served to the elderly lady.
During lunchtime, Ms. Liu enjoyed her meal in the dining car, noting, “The service is excellent, and meals are delivered directly to your seat. The journey of over four hours flew by without a dull moment.”
At 2:23 p.m., G943 arrived at Changbai Mountain Station. As the doors opened, Ms. Liang was the first to step out, pulling her suitcase against the brisk wind, eager to begin her long-awaited trip to Changbai Mountain.
For a weekend trip, here’s a quick guide! Depart leisurely on Friday. Travelers can take train G949 leaving Beijing at 6:44 p.m. and arriving at Changbai Mountain Station at 11:21 p.m. After disembarking, enjoy a local pot of Northeast-style stew or check into a pre-booked hotel for a restful night before exploring the next day.
On Saturday, enjoy a full day at Changbai Mountain. The Tianchi Lake area is divided into four slopes—East, South, West, and North. The South slope offers views of the complete Tianchi and volcanic crater shape but is open only 2-3 months a year. Go for the West slope for a complete view, though it requires climbing 1,442 steps; it’s a challenge for fitness enthusiasts! The North slope provides various attractions without needing to climb, including Green Abyss and underground forests.
Sunday is perfect for a relaxed return trip. Below are train options for returning to Beijing, including the latest G948 train arriving late at night, ensuring no disruption to Monday's schedule. For those wanting more, a stop at Tonghua to enjoy the autumn colors of Wunv Peak is also an idea!
Warm tips: 1. The railway department implements a flexible pricing mechanism along the Shenyang-Jiamusi high-speed railway, and details can be found on the 12306 website or app. 2. In October, temperatures at Changbai Mountain range from -5°C to 10°C. Dress warmly with long down jackets, thermal pants, and snow boots. 3. The Tianchi attraction can be weather-dependent, so check announcements three days in advance for updates on alternative attractions.
