According to people familiar with the matter, the negotiation process for a US-Mexico tariff agreement has stalled due to opposition from US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Sources say the two sides had previously been close to reaching a deal: the United States would lower tariffs on Mexican steel, aluminum, and automobiles, in exchange for corresponding concessions from Mexico.
However, progress in the talks has slowed due to disagreements over tariffs on automobiles and metal products.
Sources say Lutnick opposes significant cuts to the 25% tariff on Mexican-made automobiles and the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum; he also opposes reducing tariffs on finished goods made from steel and aluminum.
Nevertheless, Mexico's Deputy Trade Minister Luis Rosendo Gutierrez said the negotiations have made progress.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the US Department of Commerce also said the United States is maintaining ongoing dialogue with Mexico on trade issues.
