Pentagon CTO Flags Anthropic's Claude AI as a Risk to Defense Supply Chain

Deep News03-12

The Chief Technology Officer of the U.S. Department of Defense, Emil Michael, has stated that Anthropic's Claude artificial intelligence model poses a contamination risk to the Defense Department's supply chain due to what he described as "different policy inclinations" embedded within the model.

Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration seeking to overturn the supply chain risk designation, arguing that the government's action has placed hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts in a state of uncertainty.

In an interview with CNBC, Michael clarified that "This move is not intended as a punishment."

On Thursday, Michael explained that the concern arises from the potential for these integrated policy biases to result in military personnel receiving ineffective weapons, body armor, or protective gear. He emphasized that this is the fundamental reason behind the supply chain risk designation.

Anthropic is the first U.S. company to be publicly designated as a supply chain risk—a measure historically reserved for foreign adversaries. This designation will require defense contractors and suppliers to certify that they will not use Claude in projects related to the Pentagon.

The startup initiated legal proceedings on Monday, labeling the government's action as "unprecedented and unlawful." In its court filing, Anthropic claimed it is suffering "irreparable harm" with contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars now at risk.

Michael reiterated that the action is not punitive, noting that Anthropic has a "substantial commercial business" and that revenue from the U.S. government constitutes only a "very small part" of its income.

He also refuted claims that the government had proactively contacted companies to advise against using Anthropic's products, dismissing such assertions as "rumors." Michael stated that the Department of Defense does not intervene to instruct companies, provided their products do not enter its supply chain.

Founded in 2021 by a group of researchers and executives who departed from OpenAI, Anthropic is known for its Claude series of models and has secured early adoption among major corporate clients, including the U.S. Department of Defense.
