Samsung Achieves 80% Yield on HBM4 Ahead of Schedule, Boosting NVIDIA Vera Rubin Production Timeline

Samsung Electronics' sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory, HBM4, has reached a production yield rate close to 80%. This achievement, completed roughly four months ahead of its annual target, signals a sharp recovery in the South Korean chip giant's competitiveness in the high-end AI memory chip market.

According to a report on August 9, Samsung's HBM4 yield has recently approached the 80% mark. When mass production began in February, the yield was below 60%, and the original year-end goal was 80%. Reaching this milestone six months early has exceeded industry expectations. In the semiconductor industry, an 80% yield is known as the "golden yield," indicating that defect rates are minimized, allowing for stable production volumes and profitability to improve in tandem.

This breakthrough in yield is directly driving Samsung to accelerate its supply schedule. The company has decided to more than triple its HBM4 sales in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter. Furthermore, it plans to increase the proportion of HBM4 in its total HBM sales for the second half of the year to over 60%. Looking further ahead, Samsung has set a goal to raise its HBM market share to a level similar to its DRAM market share, which is around 38%. The expanded supply of HBM will also provide a more robust inventory of memory chips for the production of NVIDIA's AI accelerator, "Vera Rubin."

Yield Leap: A Six-Month Sprint to the Target

Samsung Electronics was the first company globally to begin mass production and shipment of HBM4 in February. However, in the early stages of production, the yield was below 60%, which limited the scale of its supply expansion.

According to industry insiders, as the scale of production continued to increase in the second half of the year, the pace of process improvement accelerated significantly. This ultimately led to the company achieving its 80% yield target approximately four months early. This progress signifies a substantial breakthrough in the production stability of HBM4 for Samsung.

In the semiconductor sector, an 80% yield is considered a critical milestone. Once this threshold is crossed, unit production costs decrease significantly, and profitability rises sharply, enabling a company to rapidly increase output while maintaining quality.

Supply Acceleration: A Tripling of Sales Targets for the Third Quarter

With yields stabilized, Samsung has immediately initiated a plan to expand its supply. The company has clearly stated its intention to more than triple its HBM4 sales in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter. It has also set a target for HBM4 to account for over 60% of its total HBM sales in the second half of the year.

Behind this goal lies the reality of persistent supply shortage in the HBM market. As investments in AI infrastructure accelerate, major clients, led by NVIDIA, are seeing a continuous rise in demand for high-performance memory chips. In the HBM market, SK Hynix currently holds a dominant position. Samsung's latest yield breakthrough is seen as a significant opportunity for it to reclaim market share.

According to reports, Samsung has set a year-end target for its HBM market share to be close to its DRAM market share, which is about 38%, demonstrating a clear intent to catch up.

Lee Jong-hwan, a professor of system semiconductor engineering at Sangmyung University, noted that for major clients like NVIDIA, sourcing from multiple suppliers is more advantageous than relying on a single source. He believes that Samsung can leverage the ramp-up in HBM4 production to rapidly expand its market influence.

The inherent demand for supply chain diversification among clients provides a favorable window for Samsung to enter the market. With the HBM4 yield rate continuing to stabilize and potentially improve further, Samsung's competitive position in the high-end AI memory chip segment is expected to see a substantial improvement.
