Leapmotor, a brand renowned for delivering exceptional value, has finally launched its first MPV product—the Leapmotor D99, with a starting price of 249,800 yuan. It is available in both extended-range and pure electric powertrains, each offering three configuration levels. The product showcases compelling features, and notably, it comes standard from the factory with energy-saving tires.
High Base Specifications, but the Mid-Range Offers Even Better Value
Leapmotor vehicles are consistently known for their high value proposition, and the D99 is no exception. Taking the base Enjoyment trim as an example, it comes with a full suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, a time-limited complimentary dual Qualcomm 8797 chip setup, an airbag count leading its segment, voiceprint recognition, a 2304W audio system, Nappa leather for the first and second rows, and continuous variable damping shock absorbers with preview capability.
The mid-range trim actually offers even greater value for money. Its second-row seats can rotate, enabling multiple modes such as forming a bed with the second row facing rearward, a bed combining the first and second rows, or a bed using the second and third rows. For family users, this feature offers high practicality, whether for children's naps, camping, or rest stops during road trips. Additionally, the mid-range trim includes dual-chamber closed air suspension, a 21.4-inch 3K screen for the rear, an 11.4L mini-fridge, and a fragrance system.
The top-tier model features unique alloy wheels, power-closing front doors, DLP headlights, aviation-style seats, and semi-aniline top-grain leather. For those with a particular desire for premium ambiance and sufficient budget, opting for the top configuration is a reasonable choice.
Dual Powertrain Options: Extended-Range and Pure Electric
There are two powertrain choices, both generously equipped. All variants feature dual-motor all-wheel drive. The extended-range model has a combined system power of 300kW and an 80.3 kWh battery, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 480km, which is ample for daily commuting. For long-distance travel or situations where charging is inconvenient, a 1.5T range extender acts as a backup, with a fuel consumption of only 6.72L/100km when the battery is depleted. This mode caters to the needs of most families today: using electricity for short trips to save money and having the convenience of fuel for long journeys.
The pure electric version offers stronger performance, with a total system power of 410kW and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 5 seconds, which is quite sufficient for an MPV. Its large 115 kWh battery provides a CLTC range of 700km. Given the same configuration level, the pure electric version is slightly more expensive, making the extended-range model a generally better choice for typical family use.
Factory-Fitted Michelin Energy-Saving Tires
While wheel designs vary between trims, the tire selection is consistent across the lineup. All models are fitted with Michelin Primacy 5 Energy tires (known as Hao Yue 5E in Chinese). According to mainstream aftermarket platforms like Tuhu, the market price for this tire ranges from approximately 1,000 to 2,000 yuan.
The Michelin Hao Yue 5E is a newly launched tire specifically designed for new energy and conventional fuel-powered family cars, having achieved triple A ratings in the EU tire label system. Several key performance indicators stand out: First, regarding range, compared to the standard Primacy 5, the 5E has lower rolling resistance, contributing to better range performance. Second is grip capability, especially wet grip. This is achieved through technologies including Michelin's proprietary Active+ rubber compound, Evergrip technology, and MaxTouch pressure distribution technology, resulting in a compound that grips better, tread patterns that evacuate water more effectively, and a more stable structure. Third is its quiet performance, utilizing the EvenPeak noise-canceling technology to "break up" noise and prevent sharp sounds from reaching the cabin.
Final Thoughts
The Leapmotor D99 may not be the absolute cheapest vehicle in its class on the market, but it arguably offers the highest value for money—in other words, it provides a lot for the price. The base version is sufficiently equipped for family use. However, if the budget allows, the mid-range Intelligent Premium trim is a more recommended choice. Regarding the powertrain, for family users, the extended-range option is not only more practical and convenient but also comes at a lower price. Although the factory offers two wheel designs, the tire size and model remain consistent, featuring a tire that is very well-suited to the attributes of a family vehicle.
