Defense technology firm Anduril and electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft maker Archer Aviation jointly announced a new autonomous vertical take-off and landing platform on Monday, designed to serve both commercial transport and military logistics needs. This marks the first jointly developed product from the two companies since announcing a strategic partnership in 2025.
This new aircraft integrates Archer's engineering expertise in electric aviation with Anduril's autonomous flight and mission systems technology. The platform features a tiltrotor design, can carry a payload of approximately 400 kilograms, has a range exceeding 500 kilometers, and possesses fully autonomous take-off, landing, and cruising capabilities without requiring remote control. Anduril stated that the aircraft's autonomous flight control system has passed rigorous simulation testing, with actual flight validation planned at multiple U.S. test sites in the coming months.
For military applications, the platform can be used for frontline supply delivery, casualty evacuation, and reconnaissance and surveillance missions. The CEO of Anduril noted that modern conflicts create a pressing need for small, low-cost, expendable autonomous transport platforms, and this aircraft can perform resupply missions in high-risk environments, reducing the risk to manned aircraft. The company is in discussions with the U.S. Department of Defense and several allied nations regarding potential procurement.
In the commercial sector, Archer positions the platform as a solution for regional logistics and emergency medical transport. Unlike Archer's existing Midnight passenger aircraft, the new platform is a dedicated cargo version, which does not require passenger airworthiness certification and is expected to secure operational approval more quickly. Archer plans to launch commercial cargo services in 2027 and is engaged in preliminary talks with several logistics firms.
The two companies did not disclose the platform's manufacturing cost or pricing strategy but stated they would leverage existing supply chains and manufacturing facilities to control costs and enable scaled production. Archer anticipates completing the platform's first round of test flights in the second half of 2026, with initial customer deliveries scheduled for 2027.
News of the new platform's release gave a boost to Archer Aviation shares, which rose approximately 5% on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday. Anduril, as a private company, does not publicly disclose valuation changes. The companies indicated they will release further details regarding platform performance specifications and customer partnerships in the coming months.
