Data from the Passenger Car Association reveals that the pickup truck market in China sold 62,000 units in June 2026, marking a year-on-year increase of 29.1% and a month-on-month rise of 2.8%. This performance represents the second-highest level for the month in the past five years, indicating a characteristic seasonal boost in production and sales during the spring-summer transition.

For the first half of the year, cumulative sales reached 343,000 units, reflecting an 11.9% increase. The domestic and export markets show distinctly different patterns.

Great Wall Motor Company Limited (601633.SH) continues to hold a dominant leadership position in the pickup segment, maintaining steady performance both domestically and internationally. Boosted by sustained year-on-year growth in exports, SAIC Maxus, JAC Motors, Zhengzhou Nissan, and Chongqing Changan Automobile Company Limited (000625.SZ) all demonstrated strong performance.

In the domestic retail market for pickups, Great Wall Motor Company Limited, Jiangling Motors, Zhengzhou Nissan, RADAR Auto, and Jiangxi Isuzu performed relatively well, maintaining the existing market structure of one dominant leader and several strong competitors.

Exports exhibited exceptionally strong momentum in June. National pickup truck exports for the month reached 38,000 units, surging 44% year-on-year and 6% month-on-month. For the January to June period, total exports amounted to 188,000 units, a 34% increase year-on-year, with the export share of the industry remaining at a high level.

The proportion of exports to total pickup sales was 45% in 2024, rising to 50% in 2025. For the first half of 2026, the cumulative export share reached 55%, with the June 2026 figure hitting 61%, indicating a significant improvement in exports of Chinese-branded pickup trucks.

In the new energy pickup segment, sales in June 2026 were 9,000 units, up 18% year-on-year but down 2% month-on-month. For the first half of the year, new energy pickup sales totaled 45,000 units, an 8% increase year-on-year. This trend shows new energy pickups growing slightly slower than the overall fuel-powered pickup segment.

With the development of electrification and passenger vehicle-oriented features, the potential of the pickup truck market is expected to gradually improve.

Within June's new energy pickup sales: Byd Company Limited (002594.SZ) sold 4,000 units overseas, Geely's RADAR electric pickup sold 2,600 units, Zhengzhou Nissan sold 1,936 units, and Changan's range-extended pickup sold 555 units. Other pickup manufacturers also achieved a certain scale in new energy vehicle sales.

As the domestic new energy pickup market initiates and cultivates demand, it is anticipated that the Chinese pickup truck sector will develop more rapidly in the future to meet both domestic and international demand.
