Changbai Mountain Sika Deer to Settle in Huzhou

Recently, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Changbai Mountain Sika Deer Industry Association of Jilin Province, and the government of Shuanglin Town, Huzhou City have reached a cooperation agreement to jointly promote the "Southern Breeding of Northern Deer" initiative—an academic, industrial, and research project focused on high-quality modern sika deer. This aims to boost resource complementarity between the North and South and promote the coordinated development of rural industries.

The first batch of sika deer from the Changbai Mountain region is scheduled to arrive in Huzhou around March to April of next year, with an expected 50 deer. They will be housed in deer farms in Huzhou, managed by dedicated personnel, and will develop a comprehensive industrial chain involving breeding, cultural tourism, and deer product development.

The Changbai Mountain sika deer, a local subspecies in China, is characterized by its stout physique, stable genetic traits, and advantages in producing both antlers and meat. The sika deer from this region displays remarkable antler production capabilities and has valuable resources. According to Yu Yue, president of the Changbai Mountain Sika Deer Industry Association, there are currently around 20,000 sika deer being raised in the Changbai Mountain area, with over 30 years of conservation efforts leading to excellent genetic resources.
