CryptoQuant says bitcoin, ether and XRP whales are accumulating, signaling a 'late-stage bear market'

Large crypto holders are increasing their bitcoin, ether, and XRP positions as prices remain under pressure, according to CryptoQuant, suggesting they may be preparing for the next market cycle.

CryptoQuant said the activity signals that the bear market is likely in its final stage. However, the firm said the market has not reached a confirmed bottom, and prices may still fall further.

"Across bitcoin, ether and XRP, the largest cohorts are adding supply as prices sit near or below their realized prices," CryptoQuant's head of research, Julio Moreno, said in a Wednesday report. "This positioning lowers downside pressure and is consistent with the final phase of the cycle's decline."

Bitcoin whale balances, excluding exchanges and mining pools, have climbed to about 3.06 million BTC after it bottomed near 2.87 million BTC in December 2025, CryptoQuant said. The data also excludes exchange-traded funds or digital asset treasury companies, Moreno told The Block.

Analyst: Bitcoin may be forming a bottom during 'boring market conditions,' and ETF inflows have failed to push prices higher

Despite Bitcoin spot ETFs recording $211.5 million in net inflows on Tuesday, Bitcoin's price remained largely flat, holding near $64,000. At the same time, spot Ethereum ETFs also recorded $53.8 million in net inflows. On the macro front, the S&P 500 index closed at an all-time high of 7,737 points on August 4, while the Nasdaq rose 2.6% driven by AI-related earnings reports; Brent crude oil fell below $80 due to easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Jasper De Maere, an OTC trader at Wintermute, pointed out that ETF buying entering the market without pushing Bitcoin's price higher is itself a key signal, indicating that marginal buyers in the spot market are not genuine directional longs. He further believes that for Bitcoin to sustain its recovery narrative, it needs a clear breakout above $65,000 in the short term. Overall, analysts interpret the current move as a 'boring bottoming' pattern: no significant panic selling, nor strong upward momentum; ETF fund flows provide support, yet prices remain capped below key resistance levels, with the market awaiting a clearer directional catalyst.
