Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is intensifying its challenge to NVIDIA (NVDA) with a comprehensive "full-stack" product strategy, aiming to capture a larger share of the trillion-dollar AI computing market. The company unveiled a wave of new offerings, including the Instinct AI accelerator, the EPYC "Venice" server CPU, and the Helios rack-scale AI platform.

CEO Lisa Su, speaking at the Advancing AI 2026 event in San Francisco, outlined AMD's vision for the total computing market to reach $2 trillion by 2030. AMD's new Helios platform, powered by the MI450 series, is positioned to compete directly with NVIDIA's next-generation Vera Rubin platform on key performance metrics. Additionally, the new EPYC "Venice" server CPU is reported to deliver approximately 20% better performance than comparable NVIDIA products.

Su confirmed that Helios is already in full production with extremely strong customer demand, with shipments expected to begin by the end of the third quarter. Server systems based on Venice are anticipated to appear in the fourth quarter of this year. Despite these announcements, AMD's stock price dropped nearly 5% during the event, suggesting the market had already priced in high expectations following a 160% year-to-date gain.

Forecasting a $2 Trillion Compute Market by 2030

AMD provided a new long-term market forecast, predicting the AI accelerator market will reach $1.4 trillion and the data center CPU market $220 billion by 2030, contributing to a total compute market of $2 trillion. The company's logic is that AI infrastructure demand now extends beyond large model training to include rapid growth in inference, AI agents, and enterprise AI applications, expanding the need for GPUs, CPUs, memory, networking, and rack-scale systems.

AMD has previously stated that its data center business is the primary driver of revenue and profit growth, and it expects server business growth to accelerate further as inference and agentic AI create new computational demands. This event marked a shift from solely focusing on GPU performance against NVIDIA to presenting a complete AI infrastructure solution covering CPUs, GPUs, networking, software, and entire systems.

Helios Platform Targets NVIDIA's System-Level Dominance

The Helios rack-scale AI platform is AMD's core offering to challenge NVIDIA's integrated infrastructure. It can integrate up to 72 MI400 series AI accelerators, with the high-end MI455X model emphasizing improved memory bandwidth, inference performance, and cost-performance ratio. Su stated the MI450 is one of the "fastest" products in the industry, with Helios systems now being produced at full speed and delivery set for the end of the third quarter of 2026.

AMD claims Helios can outperform NVIDIA's next-generation Vera Rubin platform on certain performance metrics, particularly in AI inference workloads. This represents an escalation of AMD's competitive strategy from individual GPUs to the entire rack-scale system. An OpenAI executive, Sachin Katti, stated at the event that OpenAI plans to deploy Helios at scale, noting a need for more compute power delivered faster. AMD has also secured a multi-year partnership with Meta for 6 gigawatts of AI infrastructure, utilizing the MI450 architecture, EPYC "Venice" CPUs, and Helios architecture.

Venice CPU Delivers Significant Performance Leap

The new EPYC "Venice" server CPU, built on the Zen 6 architecture with up to 256 cores, 1TB L3 cache, and 16 memory channels, is designed to solidify AMD's server CPU advantage. AMD claims Venice can deliver up to 3.4 times the performance of comparable Intel Xeon processors and is approximately 20% faster than NVIDIA's Vera CPU. Su described Venice as delivering the largest generational performance jump in the company's server CPU history, significantly outperforming Arm-based competition.

Venice is now in full mass production with strong customer demand, and server systems based on it are expected in the fourth quarter of this year. This is a key asset in AMD's AI infrastructure competition, as CPUs remain crucial for inference, data preprocessing, and general computing tasks within AI servers. The company aims to offer a complete solution with the "Venice + MI450 + Helios" combination, covering general computing to AI acceleration.

Shifting From a Chip Supplier to an AI Infrastructure Provider

AMD is moving away from its past position as a mere alternative to NVIDIA's GPUs. While it previously competed primarily on individual Instinct accelerator performance and price, the company now recognizes that customers are more focused on total system deployment speed, energy efficiency, software compatibility, and total cost of ownership. Helios is AMD's direct response to this market shift.

Beyond the MI450 GPU, the Helios platform integrates Venice CPUs, Pensando networking products, ROCm software, and the rack-scale system architecture developed with Meta through the Open Compute Project. AMD has expanded its customer base, securing large-scale deals with Anthropic, which plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 GPUs starting in the first half of 2027, alongside a potential $5 billion equity investment from AMD. This signals AMD is now securing significant orders from leading AI companies.

The market's cautious reaction, however, suggests investors still need proof beyond performance claims. NVIDIA's advantages extend to its CUDA software ecosystem, developer base, deployment experience, and system supply chain. AMD must demonstrate not just performance wins in specific tests but also the ability to secure consistent customer orders and deliver on schedule in large-scale deployments. The Advancing AI 2026 event's core message was clear: AMD is transforming from a challenger chip company into a platform company vying for AI infrastructure market share, betting on a $2 trillion compute market by 2030.
