On the news front, US President Donald Trump posted on social media on August 10, stating that after Iran demanded compensation from the US for military conflicts, he would also seek compensation from Iran. He has instructed US negotiators to include this demand in all future negotiation agendas.
Guangda Futures noted that the mutual demands for compensation between the US and Iran have dimmed the prospects for an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Overall, oil prices are expected to continue fluctuating in response to market sentiment.
Additionally, data from the US Department of Energy on August 10 shows that the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) decreased by 6.1 million barrels last week, dropping to 298.7 million barrels, the lowest level since January 1983.
Minmetals Futures previously pointed out that expectations for the US Department of Energy to release SPR are heating up, but the current strategic inventory is only about 410 million barrels, well below the long-term level of over 500 million barrels before 2020, limiting the scope for releases. The market has already factored in "policy support" expectations, which has reduced the upward pressure on oil prices from SPR releases.
