Xindi Village in Sihe Town Builds Fruit and Vegetable Planting Base Through Protected Agriculture, Achieving Off-Season Greenhouse Production and Prosperity for Local Households

On an autumn morning in Xindi Village, Sihe Town, Xihu District, the cold sheds were already bustling with activity. Bright red tomatoes hung from the vines as villagers moved among them, picking, sorting, and packing. Boxes of fresh fruit stood ready for delivery to supermarkets across the city and surrounding areas. This busy harvest scene reflects how Xindi Village is using protected agriculture to drive rural revitalization.

In the past, the village faced challenges such as a single traditional planting model, low land output value, and limited channels for increasing villagers' incomes. To solve these problems, Xindi Village turned its attention to protected agriculture. It consolidated high-quality land resources within the village and, in 2025, took the lead in establishing a planting cooperative, officially advancing the large-scale development of heated and cold shed specialty planting. Through a development model of "village committee + cooperative + farmers," the village unified planting area planning, planting standards, and production and sales channels, promoting the transition of agricultural planting toward scale and high quality, and bringing idle land back to life.

A change in approach opens up broad possibilities. Xindi Village precisely aligned with market demand and scientifically divided planting categories, forming an industrial layout of complementary heated and cold sheds, off-season planting, and year-round output. Heated sheds focus on premium specialty fruit production, with high-value fruits such as cherries and figs brought to market off-season. Cold sheds focus on essential fruits and vegetables for daily needs, with large-scale planting of seasonal vegetables such as tomatoes and bell peppers to ensure local "vegetable basket" supply. At present, the village has developed more than 50 mu of cold shed planting bases, supported by high-standard heated sheds. Differentiated and diversified planting maximizes land output efficiency.

As industry takes root, villagers benefit. "Since the beginning of this year, we have taken strengthening the village collective economy and driving villagers' income growth as the core focus of rural revitalization, relying on land resource advantages and developing specialty agricultural industries according to local conditions," said Kong Ying, a member of the Xindi Village Party General Branch Committee. The village consolidated contiguous land for standardized cooperative planting, and industrial projects gave priority to absorbing idle labor within the village. The greenhouse industry provides villagers with jobs in shed management, fruit and vegetable picking, and sorting and packaging, allowing villagers to find employment at their doorstep and increase income locally. At the same time, the village continuously optimized fruit and vegetable planting categories, opened up diverse sales channels including picking, retail, and wholesale, continued to strengthen its specialty agricultural brand, and steadily expanded the village collective economy.

"Now the village has industry, and we can work without leaving the village!" Happiness is written on the villagers' faces. From single-crop planting to year-round output, from idle land to a fruit and vegetable base, Xindi Village has used protected agriculture as its pen to write a new answer sheet for industrial revitalization in the fields. Kong Ying told reporters that next steps will continue to strengthen industrial characteristics, expand planting scale, improve production and sales chains, and continuously grow the village collective economy, truly promoting rural revitalization through industrial revitalization. In the greenhouses of Xindi Village, another crop of tomatoes has turned red, and the villagers' lives are becoming more and more prosperous, just like these bright red fruits.
