Anthropic Launches AI Software Marketplace Emulating Amazon's Model

Anthropic PBC is introducing a new platform for its enterprise clients to procure third-party software. This move expands the product offerings of the AI developer as it faces new business uncertainties following a confrontation with the U.S. Department of Defense.

The company stated on Friday that the Anthropic App Marketplace will make it easier for customers to purchase various software applications built on Anthropic's models, with service providers including Snowflake, Harvey, and Replit among the options.

As a competitor to OpenAI, Anthropic will not take a commission from these procurement transactions and will also allow clients to allocate a portion of their annual spending commitments, initially intended for Anthropic's own services, toward buying third-party tools. The company likened this model to the software marketplace approaches used by Amazon.com and Microsoft.

Anthropic has been focused on selling AI software to a broader range of industries and establishing itself as a core support for enterprise operations. However, the company now faces a new set of risks after a dispute over AI safety standards led the U.S. Department of Defense to classify it as a supply chain risk—a designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries.

This decision not only threatens Anthropic's collaboration with the Pentagon but also endangers its partnerships with other companies on defense-related projects. Anthropic has stated that it plans to legally challenge the determination.

Kate Jensen, head of Anthropic's Americas division, commented on the Pentagon's designation on Wednesday, saying, "We are having extensive communications with clients about this. The good news is that for the vast majority of customers, we expect little to no impact—business as usual."

On Thursday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei indicated that the government's restrictions are narrow enough to avoid affecting other business unrelated to specific Pentagon contracts. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the company can continue collaborating with Anthropic on non-defense projects.

Despite this, companies that work with both the Pentagon and Anthropic still face significant uncertainty. Jensen noted, "I think we are all gradually clarifying what the final outcome of this matter will be."
