Shanghai's Waigaoqiao Port Conducts First LNG Bunkering Operation of the New Year

Deep News01-30

At approximately 10:00 AM on January 29th, at the Shanghai Haitong Terminal in Waigaoqiao, the LNG bunkering vessel "Hai Gang Wei Lai" moored alongside the Liberian-flagged roll-on/roll-off ship "Huang He Kou." Under the supervision of the Waigaoqiao Border Inspection Station of the Shanghai Exit-Entry Frontier Inspection Corps, the vessels commenced an operation to transfer approximately 2,200 cubic meters of LNG over the next 10-plus hours, marking the successful completion of the first LNG bunkering service at Shanghai's Waigaoqiao Port for 2026.

Compared to traditional fuel oils, using LNG as a marine power source can significantly reduce emissions of pollutants such as carbon dioxide and sulfur oxides, playing a crucial role in helping the shipping industry achieve its "dual carbon" goals and accelerate the transition towards green, low-carbon development.

To ensure the smooth progress of this bunkering operation, the Waigaoqiao Border Inspection Station developed a customized "one vessel, one policy" service plan, strengthening coordination with the port area, agents, and operational units. It completed the inbound frontier inspection procedures for the "Huang He Kou" in advance and issued a permit for the "Hai Gang Wei Lai" to moor alongside the foreign vessel, thereby minimizing waiting times for berthing and operations.

Simultaneously, the station increased patrol frequency along the docks, enhanced management of vessels during their port stays, and tightened control over restricted areas of the port, providing a secure operational environment for the ships.

Moving forward, the Waigaoqiao Border Inspection Station will continue to support green fuel bunkering services at the Port of Shanghai, facilitating access to and mooring alongside foreign vessels for various energy bunkering operations. It aims to provide immigration management support for the development of green shipping and consistently contribute to the construction of Shanghai as an international shipping center.
