Ant Group Announces Major Organizational Restructuring: Establishes Health Business Unit with Zhang Junjie as President

Deep News11-07

On the morning of November 7, Ant Group CEO Han Xinyi issued an internal letter announcing a significant organizational upgrade. The former "Digital Healthcare Division" has been officially elevated to the "Health Business Unit," accelerating efforts to establish healthcare as a strategic pillar for the company.

This marks one of Ant Group's most critical organizational restructurings in recent years, further solidifying its business matrix. Alongside independently operated subsidiaries—Ant International, Ant Digital Technologies, and OceanBase—the company now comprises five core business units: Alipay Business Unit, Digital Payments Business Unit, Wealth & Insurance Business Unit, Credit Business Unit, and the newly established Health Business Unit. This strategic push into healthcare signals Ant's exploration of new growth avenues, completing its AI-driven strategic layout across three key sectors: lifestyle services, financial services, and healthcare services.

According to the internal letter, Zhang Junjie (Weihe) has been appointed President of the Health Business Unit. A veteran who joined Ant in 2014, Zhang was among the first employees in Alipay's healthcare division and has spearheaded core initiatives such as online medical registration and payment, electronic health insurance codes, and the AI health assistant AQ.

Ant's investment in healthcare traces back 11 years. Milestones include China's first online medical registration payment in 2014, the launch of the country's inaugural electronic health insurance code in 2019, the acquisition of Haodf.com (China's largest online consultation platform) in 2024, and the pilot of AI health assistant AQ the same year. Today, Ant Health operates three core businesses: health insurance payment services, digital medical services, and AI-powered healthcare solutions. Data shows the platform has served nearly 900 million users.

AQ, Ant Health's flagship product, has demonstrated strong momentum since its standalone app launched on June 26. Within four months, it became China's fifth AI-native application to surpass 10 million monthly active users—and the only industry-specific professional AI app on the list.

Excerpts from the internal letter: "Ant is focusing on AI applications across three service sectors: lifestyle, finance, and healthcare. To accelerate our healthcare strategy, we're elevating the Digital Healthcare Division to the Health Business Unit, with Zhang Junjie reporting directly to me."

"Over 11 years, from pioneering mobile medical payments to serving 800 million users with health insurance codes, Ant remains committed to solving societal challenges through technology."

"AI now offers critical solutions for healthcare pain points. We're doubling down on this mission to make medical care simpler and lives healthier."
