Shenzhen Tsinghua Research Institute has announced a major initiative to cultivate expertise in artificial intelligence. The institute's Executive Vice President, Liu Renchen, detailed a strategic ten-year plan focused on talent development in this critical field.
Speaking at a recent high-level forum in Hong Kong, Liu Renchen highlighted the strong collaborative potential between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Gulf nations. He noted that despite geographical distance, shared maritime economic interests create a powerful foundation for partnership. Institutions in the Gulf region, including King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, have shown significant interest in the innovative ecosystem of the Greater Bay Area, particularly Shenzhen.
Foundations for collaboration
Liu Renchen pointed out that both regions share similar developmental trajectories and ambitions. Shenzhen's transformation from a small fishing village into a global hub for technology and innovation mirrors the rapid rise experienced by Gulf nations. Both are committed to building world-class innovation clusters, creating vast opportunities for mutual cooperation.
He emphasized that Shenzhen's innovation model differs distinctly from those of Beijing or Shanghai. Its core strengths lie in a highly market-driven approach and the absolute dominance of enterprises within the innovation ecosystem.
The Shenzhen innovation model
Over 90% of Shenzhen's innovative entities are local enterprises, and more than 90% of research and development investment is led by companies themselves. Talent aggregation, technological innovation, and industrial application are all market-driven and enterprise-led. This has created an efficient, pragmatic innovation cycle closely aligned with industrial needs, which is key to Shenzhen's emergence as China's Silicon Valley and a core hub for advanced manufacturing.
Liu Renchen suggested that this mature, market-oriented science and innovation system offers a valuable reference model for Gulf nations seeking industrial upgrading and building their own innovation ecosystems.
A decade-long AI talent initiative
Crucially, Liu Renchen revealed that the Shenzhen Tsinghua Research Institute launched a significant ten-year plan last year. The initiative aims to cultivate over a hundred professional talents in the field of artificial intelligence annually for the next decade, focusing on nurturing top-tier AI experts.
"We therefore greatly look forward to cooperating with partners in Gulf countries to implement our technologies in local markets," he stated, underscoring the plan's role in fostering international collaboration.
