On October 30, gold's overall price action was rather choppy, with both low-side longs and overhead resistance shorts proving painful in the short term.
Bullion repeatedly pushed up toward the 4035-4040 area but failed to hold and stabilize there, then kept grinding lower in a steady range, breaking decisively below the 4015-4010 short-term range support, showing clearly insufficient bullish momentum.
The main reason for the current weakness is last night's batch of U.S. data, which all came in hawkish and fully confirmed the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance.
Inflation remains stubbornly elevated and economic growth beat expectations, reviving market bets on a December rate hike; on top of that, renewed geopolitical tensions have pushed oil prices higher and intensified inflation worries, while expectations of higher-for-longer rates continue to weigh on gold and make any meaningful rebound difficult.
In early Asian trading today, gold continued to come under pressure and slide, now breaking directly below the 4000-3990 threshold, with the metal still stuck in weak consolidation below the 4000 mark.
Where to focus today
The key focus for today's gold market is now fairly clear: watch the 3985-3975 support zone.
This is currently the most critical short-term defense line for gold and the first lifeline for recent price action.
If this support band is effectively broken, gold will accelerate lower, further testing the earlier lows around 3955 and even the 3945 support area; as long as 3985-3975 holds, gold will begin a brief stabilization and launch a short-term rebound correction.
So today's short-term strategy should be judged around this support: if it holds, look for a range rebound; if it breaks, look for continued trend-following declines.
Two flexible scenarios for today
We can respond flexibly to two scenarios in today's trading rhythm.
If gold keeps weakening after the European session opens this afternoon and repeatedly tests lower levels, the prudent approach is not to chase shorts and not to blindly bottom-fish, but to wait patiently for the 3975-3985 low zone before considering long entries; if instead bulls begin to stabilize around 3985-3990 after the European open, we can enter longs early around 3990.
The main short-term upside resistance is the 4030-4035 zone; on the first rebound into that area, short positions can also be considered; if the market first dips deeply to 3975-3980 and then rebounds, subsequent short entry levels can be fine-tuned up to 4015-4025, with the emphasis on adapting flexibly to real-time price action.
Short-term trading levels for today
For today's short-term gold trades, reference levels are as follows: 1) First watch support around 3985-3990; if after the European session 3985 is still not broken and a rebound begins, consider going long around 3985-3990 with a protective stop below 3975 and an initial target of 4020-4030 above; 2) If weakness continues after the European session, the next long entry can only be considered around 3975, with a protective stop below 3960 and a target back up at 4000-4010; 3) On subsequent rebounds, the first touch of the 4030-4035 area can be sold short, with a protective stop above 4050 and a target back down at 4005-3995; 4) If the European or U.S. session first drops to 3975-3980 and then rebounds, the later short entry can be moved down to 4015-4025, with a protective stop above 4040 and a target back down at 3995-3990.
