Wing, the drone delivery company owned by Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), and retail giant Wal-Mart Inc. (WMT) announced this week the expansion of their drone delivery service to seven new metropolitan areas across the United States.
This move is part of a joint plan to establish a network of over 270 delivery sites by 2027.
The new markets added include Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Salt Lake City.
This expansion brings the total number of markets served by the partnership to nearly 20 across the country.
Wing stated that this growth is based on the successful completion of over one million commercial deliveries through their existing collaboration.
Wing Executive Comments
Heather Rivera, Chief Commercial Officer at Wing, commented that the partnership with Walmart demonstrates that drone delivery is not a passing novelty but a service many customers rely on multiple times per week.
She revealed that the company is already working with local communities in these seven new markets, progressing toward a goal of providing ultra-fast delivery to 40 million residents nationwide.
Service Details
Wing's drones can fly at speeds up to 60 miles per hour and use a tether system to lower packages directly into a customer's yard or driveway.
Deliveries can be completed in as little as 30 minutes.
Once the service is live in an area, customers within the delivery zone will see the option in the Walmart app or website and can also order directly through the Wing application.
Walmart Executive Perspective
Greg Cassie, Senior Vice President of E-commerce Fulfillment Transformation at Walmart, stated that customers expect to receive their orders on their own terms, with speed and convenience.
He noted that expanding into new markets provides customers with innovative delivery choices, leveraging Walmart's extensive store network to make everyday shopping and fulfilling immediate needs easier.
Expansion Plan Context
This latest expansion is part of the previously announced plan.
According to the plan, Wing and Walmart aim to build a network of more than 270 drone delivery sites by 2027, serving over 40 million U.S. consumers.
Walmart has previously launched drone delivery services in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the greater Houston region, and the Atlanta metropolitan area.
