On October 29, French President Macron stated that the successor to European Central Bank President Lagarde should be coordinated with European partners, ensuring an orderly handover that takes into account the interests of all parties, and expressed sincere gratitude for Lagarde's work during her term.
Lagarde announced her resignation that day and will officially step down on February 7, 2027, about nine months earlier than her original term end in late October 2027.
This arrangement gives EU leaders an opportunity to determine the successor before France's presidential election next April.
According to EU regulations, the new ECB President will be appointed by the European Council.
