Jilin Provincial Hospital Expansion Project Launches, Adding New Medical Landmark Near Hongqi Street

Deep News11:21

The expansion project for Jilin Provincial Hospital has officially commenced within the area bounded south of Hongqi Street, east of Xinyi Road, and north of Hulin Street in Changchun's Chaoyang District. This medical complex, with a total floor area of approximately 27,800 square meters, is being constructed by China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp., Ltd. with a construction period of 639 days. It is expected to be completed in June 2027. The project includes the construction of a new outpatient building (#1) spanning about 14,500 square meters, alongside the renovation and upgrade of the existing outpatient building covering approximately 12,700 square meters. Upon completion, the facility will serve as a pilot project for the national "Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine 'Flagship' Hospital" initiative.

The history of Jilin Provincial Hospital dates back to 1946. Originally named Jilin Provincial Hospital, it underwent several name changes and relocations before being officially designated "Jilin Provincial Hospital" in 1966 and establishing its permanent location on Hongqi Street. Over the past nearly sixty years, the old building has witnessed the life cycles of generations of Changchun residents. For long-time residents, the hospital is more than just a medical facility—it is the emergency room they were carried to as children with fevers, the corridors where they queued for registrations with elderly relatives, and the ever-lit beacon adjacent to the Hongqi Street commercial area. During the 1980s and 1990s, the hospital was a leading center for medical technology within the province. Patients from surrounding cities and counties would travel by train to Changchun for treatment, where besides the First Hospital of Jilin University, Jilin Provincial Hospital was another highly reputable institution. Its departments of obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, and orthopedics were particularly well-regarded among the public, with "going to the Provincial Hospital to see a specialist" being a common first response for many families facing health issues.

With urban development, challenges such as cramped space and aging facilities in the old campus became increasingly apparent. Overcrowded outpatient halls and severe parking shortages became shared frustrations for both patients and medical staff. This expansion represents a vital "rebirth" opportunity for the nearly 80-year-old institution. The new outpatient building will significantly enhance the medical environment, while its designation as an "Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Flagship Hospital" indicates the hospital's aim to strengthen its Western medical expertise while also developing its Traditional Chinese Medicine specialties. The transition from the old building to the new signifies not just a hardware upgrade, but also the determination of this established hospital to redefine its role within the evolving healthcare landscape.

The vibrancy of Hongqi Street will continue, and in just over a year, a new medical structure will rise within the current construction site. For residents near Hulin Street and Xinyi Road, the more than 600 days of construction will culminate in a more spacious and modern Jilin Provincial Hospital. By the summer of 2027, it is anticipated that patients will be welcomed through brighter doors into a more comfortable and reassuring healthcare experience.
