Chongqing Launches GMS International Road Transport Route to Thailand

Deep News12-02

Chongqing has successfully tested its second Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) international road transport route, connecting the city to Thailand. The new route follows the earlier "Chongqing-Vietnam Haiyang" line and marks another milestone in regional logistics cooperation.

The approximately 2,700-kilometer journey takes around five days, leveraging the Cross-Border Transport Agreement (CBTA) to streamline operations. The "zero reloading, zero container lifting, zero unpacking" model minimizes cargo damage risks, ensuring seamless "one-commission, one-document, one-container" delivery. This provides international trade clients with customized "one-stop, door-to-door, end-to-end" cross-border road transport services.

A recent trial run saw a truck loaded with laptop components depart from Chongqing's Nanping Highway Bonded Logistics Center (Type B), exit via China's Mohan Port in Yunnan, transit through Laos, and enter Thailand via the Huay Xai/Chiang Khong border before reaching Thailand's Chonburi industrial hub.

Previously, land transport between Chongqing and Thailand required multiple container transfers at various ports, taking at least six days with higher cargo damage risks. The new GMS route cuts transit time by at least 15% while significantly reducing damage rates, according to Shenzhen Hezhi International Logistics, a key logistics partner.

With routes now operational to Vietnam and Thailand, Chongqing's GMS network covers half of the subregion's countries. Chongqing ASEAN International Logistics Co., Ltd. reports partnerships with over 270 domestic and international manufacturing and trading firms, bolstering high-value supply chains like electronics between Chongqing and Southeast Asia.

The route is also expected to facilitate smoother imports of Thai fruits and agricultural products into inland China, with Chongqing serving as a gateway to broader Asian and European markets.
