Tensions remain high in the Strait of Hormuz as the United States and Iran continue their confrontation.
The US Central Command stated on the 19th that US forces fired upon an Iranian cargo ship attempting to breach the blockade and reach Iran's Bandar Abbas port, disabling its propulsion. US Marines subsequently boarded and took control of the vessel. According to US military officials, the crew of the seized Iranian ship will be returned to Iran shortly. A Marine team is currently searching up to 5,000 containers aboard the cargo ship. Once the search is complete, US officials will decide how to handle the disabled vessel.
A report on April 21st cited former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley as stating that the ship seized by the US in the Strait of Hormuz was en route from China to Iran and was being used to transport chemical precursors for missiles.
In response to inquiries during a regular press briefing on the 21st, a spokesperson stated that, based on their understanding, the vessel is a foreign-flagged container ship, and they oppose any malicious association and sensationalism regarding the incident.
Iran has demanded that the US release the seized vessel and its personnel. In a separate development, another Iranian oil tanker has reportedly breached the US naval blockade. According to reports on the 21st, information from maritime intelligence firm "Tanker Trackers" indicates that a tanker belonging to the National Iranian Tanker Company, after unloading approximately 2 million barrels of crude oil in Indonesia, is returning to Iran via the relevant maritime blockade line. The tanker is currently heading towards Iran's primary oil export hub, Kharg Island, and is expected to arrive on the 22nd local time. It was reported that the tanker departed from Iran in late March bound for the Riau Islands in Indonesia.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the 21st strongly condemning the US attack on an Iranian cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on the 19th and demanded the immediate release of the seized vessel and its crew. The statement described the attack on the Iranian cargo ship and the detention of its crew as acts of piracy and terrorism, a blatant violation of the ceasefire understanding between the two countries, and an act of aggression against Iran. The statement warned the US that attacking Iranian ships could have very dangerous consequences, stating that it is evident the US bears full responsibility for any further escalation of regional tensions. Iran's Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi stated that US actions against an Iranian merchant ship in Omani waters constitute a "war crime" and affirmed that Iran "will certainly respond to these actions." Ejehi pointed out that the US's so-called "maritime blockade" of Iranian ports and coasts, along with its "aggressive actions" against Iranian merchant ships in Omani waters, violate the ceasefire agreement and are a "typical example of war crimes." He also stated that the possibility of the US and Israel launching renewed attacks is "not small," and Iran must maintain 100% combat readiness.
Trump: "Winning Big" White House: US and Iran on "Verge" of a Deal On April 20th, US President Donald Trump posted multiple messages on social media defending military action against Iran. He claimed that the agreement he is reaching with Iran will be "far superior" to the 2015 JCPOA negotiated by the Obama administration. He denied being under "pressure" to reach a deal, stating that "everything will happen very quickly."
Trump also declared that he is "winning a war, winning big, a lot of things are going very well," but "fake news" media makes it seem like the US is losing this "war." Trump claimed the US maritime blockade is "totally decimating Iran's economy" and will not be lifted before an agreement is reached. In his posts, he also suggested the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is benefiting the US, having "already forced hundreds of ships to head to the United States" to purchase US-produced oil.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, in an interview with Fox News on the evening of the 20th, stated that the US and Iran are on the "verge" of reaching an agreement. Jean-Pierre said, "The United States has never been closer to a truly good agreement." However, she did not disclose any information regarding the current status of the negotiations. Jean-Pierre stated that even if an agreement is not reached, President Trump still has multiple options and is not afraid to use them. Previous actions have proven that Trump is not "bluffing." In a telephone interview with US media on the 20th, Trump insisted that Iran "will negotiate." However, Iran has not yet confirmed sending a delegation to Pakistan for US-Iran talks.
