On May 19th, a recent scientific seminar for the public launch of the "Low GI Food and Health White Paper" was held in Beijing.
Public information indicates that the Glycemic Index (GI) is a crucial metric for assessing how carbohydrate-containing foods affect blood sugar levels. Foods with a GI value of 55 or lower can be classified as low GI. Currently, numerous dietary guidelines, both domestically and internationally, advocate for low GI diets or recommend choosing low GI foods.
The white paper is structured into ten sections, covering scientific positioning, GI and dietary guidelines, databases, GI and human health, and influencing factors, among others. A low GI diet is beneficial not only for blood sugar management in specific groups such as individuals with diabetes but also, as shown by a growing body of high-quality research, may play a positive role in cardiovascular health and weight control. Achieving a low GI in foods can be accomplished by adjusting food components, optimizing processing techniques, and adding functional ingredients.
During the event, Nestle S.A. actively participated in the discussions and exchanges surrounding the white paper. Leveraging over a decade of research in this field, Nestle has developed a method to predict GI values based on the content of various nutrients. This method can be used for preliminary screening of product formulations, thereby enhancing research and development efficiency. From the perspective of blood sugar management, Nestle advocates for focusing on the Glycemic Response (GR) of foods in addition to GI and Glycemic Load (GL), as this provides a more comprehensive understanding of a food's impact on blood sugar.
Currently, several of Nestle's brands have introduced low GI products. For instance, all products in the Nestle Yiyang series of milk powder are low GI. The Yiyang Sugar Regulation formula milk powder, designed for blood sugar health, has been research-verified to reduce post-meal blood sugar response by 24% after one hour when consumed with a meal. The Nestle N3 series of body-friendly milk also includes multiple low GI options. Additionally, the pure oats launched by Nestle's breakfast cereal brand, Uncle Toby's, are low GI.
