BYD Chief Scientist Unveils Ambitious Plan to Build 90,000 Charging Stations Within Two Years

At the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress held in Haikou, Hainan from September 22 to 24, Byd Company Limited's Chief Scientist and Dean of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, Lian Yubo, delivered a keynote address outlining the company's vision for the future of electric mobility. He emphasized that while electrification remains the foundational and most critical pillar of the industry, the sector must also embrace full-scale intelligence to cater to diverse consumer needs and elevate the overall driving experience.

After years of significant investment in powertrain technology, new energy vehicles have achieved substantial improvements in range, safety, and dynamic performance. However, a prominent bottleneck persists: charging speeds still lag behind the convenience of refueling conventional vehicles. During holiday long-distance travel or in frigid winter conditions, users frequently encounter slow charging times, insufficient charging infrastructure, and subpar battery performance at low temperatures.

Lian highlighted a structural contradiction, noting that high-power charging imposes rigorous demands on grid capacity and battery technology, making the charging difficulty a critical obstacle restricting the broader adoption of new energy vehicles. He explained that the battery itself serves as the foundation for achieving rapid charging. The company's first-generation Blade Battery successfully addressed issues of safety and energy density; building on that, the second-generation Blade Battery was developed with a focus on fast-charging capabilities, overcoming challenges related to ion migration, efficient heat dissipation, and temperature management while expanding the boundaries of LFP batteries in fast charging, longevity, and environmental adaptability to enable megawatt-level flash charging.

Lian confirmed that Byd Company Limited has now completed a full-industry-chain deployment encompassing the second-generation Blade Battery, complete vehicles, photovoltaic charging stations, and energy storage systems, with over 10,000 flash charging stations already operational. The company plans to construct a total of 90,000 charging stations over the next two-plus years. Drawing a parallel to the approximately 90,000 gas stations nationwide, the objective is to achieve a charging station density comparable to that of traditional fuel stations, covering urban centers, highways, and remote areas to establish a comprehensive flash charging ecosystem.

Starting in the first quarter of next year, the company will roll out these flash charging sites globally. Lian also revealed that ahead of the National Day holiday, 2,000 new flash charging stations have been added along national highways, with construction scheduled for completion within the next two days to accommodate holiday travel demand.
