The integrated green alcohol-oil project combining green hydrogen with biomass in Taonan City was officially launched on August 20, according to an announcement from the official WeChat account of Shanghai Electric on August 21. This second-phase initiative in Taonan is designed to produce 200,000 tonnes of green methanol and 10,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually.
The project leverages Shanghai Electric's next-generation green fuel system solution, introducing a pioneering off-grid direct-connection model. It relies on a diversified green power supply combining wind, solar, storage, and biomass, and integrates key technologies such as advanced water electrolysis for hydrogen production, pure-oxygen pressurized fluidized bed biomass gasification 3.0, CO₂-rich syngas methanol synthesis, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for SAF. This creates a multi-product portfolio of green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel, driving the large-scale adoption of green fuels in aviation and maritime sectors.
The first phase of the Taonan project had already established a complete process chain from green power to green hydrogen, biomass, and green methanol, achieving a full-cycle closure from R&D and production to end-use application. The green methanol produced has been bunkered twice at Shanghai's Yangshan Port, setting a global record for single-batch green methanol refueling, demonstrating that Shanghai Electric's core technologies in biomass gasification, electrolytic hydrogen production and storage, and methanol synthesis are ready for large-scale deployment.
