Humanoid Robot Shipments Surge but Homes Remain Out of Reach, Home Furnishing Firms Step In to Tackle the Tough Challenge of Spatial Adaptation

Humanoid robot shipments are climbing at a breakneck pace, yet their penetration rate in households remains strikingly low, a persistent dilemma in the home living sector. IDC data shows that in 2025, global humanoid robot shipments reached approximately 18,000 units, a year-on-year surge of about 508%. According to the "2026 Humanoid Robot Industry Development Report" released by the Chinese Institute of Electronics, shipments in China surpassed 40,000 units in the first half of 2026, further lifting the global share to 97%. However, IDC figures for 2025 indicate that among global application scenarios, entertainment and commercial performances accounted for 36.8%, education and research 24.6%, followed by data collection, guided tours and retail assistance, and industrial manufacturing, with home services commanding an extremely low share.

Between the soaring shipment numbers and the dismal household adoption rate stand two major hurdles. The first is price, as a high-performance humanoid robot currently carries a hardware cost of roughly 300,000 to 600,000 yuan. The second is spatial adaptation, as Stanford HAI's "AI Index 2026" report reveals that while task completion rates reach 89.4% in simulated environments, they plummet to just 12% in real home settings. While price reductions hinge on industrial chain scaling and the advancement of domestic substitution, the spatial adaptation issue is forcing the home furnishing industry to search for solutions. A race centered on "home space adaptation" has quietly kicked off across the broader home furnishing sector.

At an experiential retail store opened on September 5 by 尚品宅配 (Sunpina) and 启元机器人 (ChiYuan Robotics), a subsidiary of 上纬新材 (Shangwei New Materials), the command "Q仔, Q仔, please help me find the thermos cup" set the robot in motion, scouring the living room before remotely opening a sideboard drawer via the central control system to retrieve the cup. During this "Robot-Ready Home" demonstration, the robot showcased capabilities including autonomous navigation for cross-space item transport, precise object search with interactive guidance, English tutoring for children, and nighttime medication reminders alongside sleep assistance.

Notably, 尚品宅配 (Sunpina) and 启元机器人 (ChiYuan Robotics) signed a strategic cooperation agreement in July during the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, centered on jointly building a "robot-friendly home" ecosystem. By September, the framework had evolved into tangible action with the official establishment of their joint venture, 尚元智启(广州)机器人科技有限公司 (Shangyuan Zhiqi (Guangzhou) Robotics Technology Co., Ltd.). For its part, 启元机器人 (ChiYuan Robotics) developed and launched two consumer-grade embodied intelligence robots this year, the "ChiYuan Q1" and "ChiYuan T1," which opened for public pre-orders in late August with first deliveries slated for September, though final pricing has yet to be fully disclosed.

尚品宅配 (Sunpina) is far from alone in this endeavor. Across the home furnishing industry, a wave of companies is charting distinct paths into this arena. In August, 金牌家居 (Gold Home) forged a strategic alliance with 拓元(广州)智慧科技有限公司 (Tuoyuan (Guangzhou) Smart Technology Co., Ltd.), focusing on AI applications in family scenarios to drive the deployment of home service robots. Meanwhile, 索菲亚 (Sogal) invested 30 million yuan in the first half of the year to establish a digital intelligence subsidiary, which industry analysts interpret as a strategic move to systematically consolidate and extend its existing digital capabilities.

While their approaches differ, the direction converges on one goal: seizing the gateway to home scenarios. On September 5, 周为嘉 (Zhou Weijia), co-general manager of 尚品宅配 (Sunpina)'s brand and general manager of 尚元智启 (Shangyuan Zhiqi), remarked: "Today, 'beautiful home living' is not just about fully functional, well-designed rooms, but about spaces that perceive, respond, and accompany. We aim to make robots warm companions that can step into living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens, becoming brand-new partners in family life."

Amid the buzz, a more fundamental question surfaces: even if prices drop, once a robot enters the door, can it truly "settle in"? According to media reports, the Stanford HAI "AI Index 2026" report discloses a critical set of figures: humanoid robots achieve an 89.4% success rate in controlled software simulations, but once deployed in real home settings, the rate of fully and safely completing tasks collapses to roughly 12%. This staggering 77-percentage-point "performance evaporation" points to a core issue: the unstructured nature of home environments far exceeds that of laboratories and simulations. Varying floor plans, inconsistent furniture layouts, slippery floors, pets darting about, children scattering toys on the ground, these everyday micro-uncertainties all contribute to the robots' "culture shock."

At the experiential store, a home furnishing industry practitioner noted that unlike the standardized environments typical of factories, every home differs in layout, lighting, and obstacle distribution, making household settings rife with variables. This underscores a severe shortage of multimodal training data for domestic environments. According to analysis from 国盛证券 (Guosheng Securities), data represents the core barrier to commercialization in embodied intelligence, with home scenarios urgently requiring real-world spatial adaptation. While humanoid robot hardware is gradually maturing, the fundamental obstacle to large-scale household adoption is the critical scarcity of real-home scenario data, as the performance gap between laboratory simulations and actual homes remains substantial, with the industry facing a gap of more than 20 times in high-quality real-world interaction data.

尚品宅配 (Sunpina)'s solution is to bring robot requirements forward to the design phase. The company leverages its deep roots in the home furnishing sector, which have accumulated over 3 million real floor plans and more than 30 million design solutions. By converting these static home decoration blueprints into digital spatial foundations that robots can recognize and train on, it plans ahead from the source of whole-home customization, pre-arranging robot navigation paths, autonomous recharging points, and human-machine interaction interfaces to tackle the challenge of adapting to non-standard home environments.

It is worth noting that the industry remains generally cautious about timelines for "robots entering homes." During the 2026 World Robot Conference, 钱东奇 (Qian Dongqi), chairman of 科沃斯 (Ecovacs), stated that humanoid robots entering households could take "3 years in an optimistic scenario, 5 years in a pessimistic one." Additionally, research from 浦银国际 (SPDB International) indicates that home service scenarios feature unstructured environments and numerous long-tail use cases, demanding exceptionally high safety and intelligence standards. While the home sector is expected to become a significant growth driver in the market over the long term, large-scale adoption is projected to arrive only after 2030.
