Hong Kong Stock Movers: Coal Stocks Retreat Collectively as Thermal Coal Prices Surge; Institutions Say Short-Term Downstream Acceptance Worth Watching Again

Stock News10-15

Coal stocks retreated collectively, as of press time, Kinetic Development Group Ltd (01277) fell 6.91% to HK$1.82; Yancoal Australia Ltd (03668) dropped 5.71% to HK$32.04; Yankuang Energy Group Co Ltd (01171) declined 4.94% to HK$11.17; China Coal Energy Co Ltd (01898) slipped 4.82% to HK$10.26.

On the news front, thermal coal prices have continued their strong upward trend since breaking through the 1,000 yuan mark on October 10. As of October 13, the free-on-board price of 5,500 kcal thermal coal (Shanxi origin) at Qinhuangdao Port was reported at 1,013 yuan per ton, up 331 yuan per ton compared to 682 yuan per ton at the beginning of the year, a gain of 48.5%, hitting a two-year high.

It is worth noting that nine central state-owned enterprise power trading companies in Guangxi Autonomous Region jointly submitted a letter to the regional government, stating that the power trading industry is expected to incur a full-year loss of 5 billion yuan. China Merchants Securities pointed out that short-term downstream acceptance is once again worth watching. The effects of Document No. 666 have not yet materialized. Along with rising coal prices, power plant profitability is under pressure, and at the trading level, this may temporarily suppress bullish expectations in the short term, which is the biggest current disturbance for the sector.
