Anthropic Secures $300 Billion Funding Terms Led by Sequoia and Others

Anthropic has finalized terms for a $300 billion funding round, with a post-money valuation reaching $9000 billion, and the transaction is expected to be completed as early as this month. Leveraging its explosive growth this year, the company's valuation is set to surpass that of its competitor OpenAI.

According to two informed sources, investors Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, and Altimeter Capital have agreed to jointly lead this funding round. Excluding new capital, this round will push the AI lab's valuation to $9000 billion, nearly tripling from previous levels.

Each lead investor plans to commit $20 billion or more. Anthropic is in discussions with other investors to secure the remaining funding amount, and terms may still be adjusted before an official announcement.

The funding round is progressing at an exceptionally rapid pace: sources indicate that last month, investors proactively approached Anthropic, and Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao initiated formal negotiations with potential investors over the past two weeks.

This funding round comes just three months after CEO Dario Amodei led the company's previous $300 billion funding round at a valuation of $3500 billion. The company's revenue has seen substantial growth, with its revenue scale already exceeding that of OpenAI (the two companies use different accounting standards).

Annualized revenue, extrapolated from recent data, is on track to surpass $450 billion, marking a fourfold increase from $90 billion at the end of last year.

Informed sources note that this impressive performance has attracted intense interest from both new and existing investors.

Anthropic and Sequoia Capital declined to comment; Dragoneer, Altimeter, and Greenoaks have not yet responded to requests for comment.

These three investors are also core backers of OpenAI (the latter's latest valuation is $8520 billion): Dragoneer invested nearly $30 billion in OpenAI last year; Sequoia Capital has been investing in OpenAI since 2021; Altimeter CEO Brad Gerstner has invited OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as a guest on his podcast and has publicly expressed strong support for OpenAI on multiple occasions.

This $300 billion funding round does not currently involve participation from major technology giants. Previously, Anthropic has secured hundreds of billions in investments from tech giants such as Amazon.com and Alphabet.
