This small corn is a treasure left by our ancestors, cultivated in China for over 100 years. We found it in Dongbang Town, Changshu, and spent more than five years improving it. On the morning of February 2nd, at the committee members' passage of the Fourth Session of the 13th Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Zhao Han, Director of the Institute of Germplasm Resources and Biotechnology at the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, brought along an ear of glossy "Golden Mini Corn." This ear of corn serves as a vivid testament to the efforts of Jiangsu's breeders in protecting germplasm resources. At the Institute of Germplasm Resources and Biotechnology of the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, there are over 3,000 such "hereditary treasures" collected from fields and the front and back yards of rural homes.
Zhao Han stated, "Germplasm resources are the 'chips' of food security, and particularly, local germplasm resources are our hereditary treasures. There are many seeds whose characteristics we do not fully understand yet, but they may play a significant role in the future. Therefore, we must first preserve them, then mine their superior genes. One day, when weather, environment, and other conditions change, they can play a crucial role."
