"Absolutely Perfect"! SK hynix Reports Sixfold Profit Surge, But Analyst Warns This Could Be the Peak

SK hynix has delivered a record-breaking earnings report, yet the market's reaction is far from a simple celebration. While analysts acknowledge its fundamental value, they also directly point to a core issue: this may represent the high point for the company's performance.

Regarding SK hynix's historic earnings, Riedel Research analyst David Riedel offered a rare and straightforward assessment: "I think it really doesn't get any better than this." He stated that the sixfold increase in profitability is certainly impressive, but the recent pullback in the stock price is merely a normal correction of the overheated AI market bubble. Simultaneously, he emphasized that the long-term thesis for SK hynix remains intact, suggesting the stock still has significant room for upward movement.

From a market perspective, chip stocks have recently faced pressure from multiple directions: concerns among US investors about circular borrowing between AI companies, combined with shocks from competitive chip products. David Riedel believes these factors have collectively contributed to a period of capital retreat, and that SK hynix's previous 120% surge within just a few months had already accumulated excessive sentiment premiums.

Pricing the Growth Path After Record Earnings

SK hynix demonstrated strong profitability this quarter, but David Riedel directly characterized it as a cyclical peak. "Sixfold earnings growth, I believe this is the peak," he stated. "The market had previously piled on too much AI hype, and that premium ought to be squeezed out."

He does not believe there has been any fundamental deterioration but rather characterizes the current adjustment as a return to reasonable valuation. "Now we are back to reasonable valuations and reasonable outlooks. These chip stocks still have a long way to go, but they simply cannot run as quickly as before." In his view, after the stock price undergoes active digestion, subsequent market movements will be more sustainable.

Re-pricing the Memory Business: The Underrated 'Boring Sector'

Against the backdrop of the AI concept dominating market narratives, the value of traditional memory chips has been overshadowed. David Riedel provides a clear reassessment: he believes the "boring memory business" will prove to be valuable in the future, and the fundamental story for SK hynix in this area remains intact.

One key factor supporting this judgment is the long-term supply agreements SK hynix has signed with its customers. David Riedel points out that the structural arrangements of such agreements are designed to defend against memory price fluctuations, providing an effective buffer for the company's revenue predictability. This ensures that even amidst short-term market sentiment swings, the long-term supply-demand landscape and pricing power remain stable.

Strategic Choices with Ample Cash Flow

Perhaps more noteworthy than the financial report data itself is another signal from SK hynix's earnings release: the company has clearly stated it will "meaningfully expand shareholder returns."

David Riedel believes this statement itself is highly telling. "They are not even thinking about adding additional capacity," he analyzed. "They are happy to see the market maintain a degree of supply tightness, and they enjoy this dynamic as a major player, while sharing some of the benefits with shareholders."

He further notes that with the stock price already significantly increased and the company holding ample cash on its books, large-scale capacity expansion is not strategically sensible. Whether ultimately realized through buybacks or dividends, returning excess cash to shareholders is a superior choice. This strategic signal suggests that management intends to keep market supply relatively tight to protect memory prices and profit margins, rather than pursuing market share through scale.
