Sichuan Province Reports 4.8% GDP Growth for First Half of 2026

Official data released on July 16th reveals that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Sichuan Province for the first six months of 2026 reached 3.362945 trillion yuan.

When calculated using constant prices, this figure represents a year-on-year increase of 4.8%.

Breaking down the data by industry, the added value of the primary sector was 195.346 billion yuan, marking a 3.6% increase.

The secondary sector's added value stood at 1.164108 trillion yuan, growing by 4.9%.

The tertiary sector, or services, contributed 2.003492 trillion yuan in added value, also rising by 4.8%.

Agricultural production showed positive trends, with summer grain output reaching 4.839 million tons, a rise of 76,000 tons or 1.6% compared to the previous year.

Key economic crops maintained steady growth, with preliminary statistics indicating vegetable output grew by 3.4%, tea output by 4.5%, and fruit output by 5.4% in the first half of the year.

In terms of livestock, pig slaughter numbers reached 31.173 million head, a 1.2% increase, while poultry slaughter stood at 290 million birds, up 0.2%.

Egg production reached 965,000 tons, growing 3.3%, and aquatic product output was 994,000 tons, a 5.1% increase.

The service sector's 4.8% growth was driven by varied performances across its subsectors.

Wholesale and retail trade grew by 3.0%, while transport, storage, and postal services increased by 3.2%.

The accommodation and catering sector saw a stronger rise of 6.7%.

The financial sector expanded by 8.0%, and information transmission, software, and IT services grew by 9.8%.

The most significant growth was in the leasing and business services sector, which surged by 14.1%.

Consumer market performance remained stable, with total retail sales of consumer goods reaching 1.44499 trillion yuan, a 2.0% year-on-year increase.

Analyzing sales of popular goods, retail sales of cultural and office supplies by enterprises above a designated size jumped by 16.2%.

Sales of grain, oil, and food products increased by 13.2%, and tobacco and alcohol products grew by 13.0%.

Sales of communication equipment rose by 7.3%, while petroleum and related products saw a decline of 7.0%.

For the first half of the year, Sichuan Province's tax-electricity index, a key gauge of economic activity, registered at 101.5.

Within this index, the production component was 101.3, and the sales component was 102.3.

A provincial statistics official stated that overall, the provincial economy operated steadily in the first half of the year, with its inherent resilience continuing to strengthen.

However, it was noted that the external environment remains complex and volatile, the contradiction between strong supply and weak demand within the province is still pronounced, and the foundation for a sustained economic recovery is not yet solid.

Moving forward, efforts will focus on advancing the development of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic zone, implementing the strategy for synchronized development across sectors, urban-rural integration, and coordinated growth among regions.

The province also aims to diligently implement measures to consolidate and expand the momentum of stable and improving economic performance, striving to propel the overall economic recovery.
