UBS: Analog Chip Cycle Still Rising, Texas Instruments Named Top Pick

Stock News10-19

According to Woofun AI, UBS has determined that the upward trend in the analog chip cycle remains intact and has established Texas Instruments (TXN.US) as its top pick in the sector.

Despite recent weak market sentiment, distributor inventories fell 7% quarter-over-quarter to the 10% range while prices rose 9% to 12% quarter-over-quarter, with structural tightening of supply and demand serving as the core logic supporting the continuation of the cycle.

A U.S. semiconductor report released on October 16, 2026 revealed dramatic shifts in the micro market. Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that the True Analog inventory index stood at 85, down 7% quarter-over-quarter and down 15% year-over-year; the Power Analog inventory index was 76, down 10% quarter-over-quarter and down 18% year-over-year; and the MCU inventory index was 91, down 5% quarter-over-quarter and down 3% year-over-year.

On the pricing side, divergence emerged: True Analog average selling prices rose 12% quarter-over-quarter, Power Analog gained 9%, discrete devices surged 34%, while only MCU declined 7%.

Supply and demand surveys further confirmed the tightening conditions: net demand expectations reached +79%, near-term net demand was +75%, recent price increases were net 68% with expected increases at net 65%, and delivery time momentum was +65%.

Regarding supply adequacy, 38% of distributors and 26% of direct buyers believed supply was above target, but 70% of distributors and 76% of direct buyers were concerned about shortages over the next six months, a ratio that rose 3 percentage points. To lock in supply, 73% of respondents placed advance orders or signed long-term agreements, 53% increased inventories, and those reporting extended delivery times rose from 62% to 65%.

Corporate earnings forecasts and in-depth inventory analysis revealed divergence in industry conditions. In the third quarter, Texas Instruments (TXN.US) revenue grew 10.7% quarter-over-quarter (versus seasonal 6.1%), Analog Devices (ADI.US) grew 8.5% (versus seasonal 4.6%), Microchip Technology (MCHP.US) grew 8.5% (versus seasonal 4.3%), ON Semiconductor (ON.US) grew 5.4% (versus seasonal 4.0%), while Allegro MicroSystems (ALGM.US) grew 6.0%, below the seasonal 7.1%.

In terms of inventory structure, Texas Instruments (TXN.US) had 75 days of finished goods inventory, above the industry average of 39 days and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI.US)'s 43 days.

Second-quarter data showed that production grew 7% quarter-over-quarter, revenue grew 11% quarter-over-quarter, and total inventories were flat. Microchip Technology (MCHP.US) executed its nine-point plan, reducing inventory days by 9 to 175 days; ON Semiconductor (ON.US) reduced inventory days by 11 to 189 days, with production at approximately 100% of sales.

Texas Instruments (TXN.US) is viewed as a target with special share growth conditions, supported by share recovery potential and a free cash flow inflection point after capital expenditure declines. UBS set its fourth-quarter quarter-over-quarter growth forecast at 200 to 300 basis points, above normal seasonal levels.

The cycle upturn is driven by four major signals: low distributor inventories, continued price increases, strong demand, and tightening supply. However, the technology sector faces risks including rapid technological change, intensifying competition, macroeconomic cycle exposure, and high capital investment, while Texas Instruments (TXN.US) is also constrained by pricing pressure and cyclical demand in end markets. The key variables for cycle sustainability lie in the timing of distributor restocking and the duration of supply tightening.
